Located just east of the Ross Island Bridge, this diner is typically slammed on weekends. The order line often snakes out the door, and even if you're inside at a table you'll feel the pressure to eat up and get moving. You can call in an order ahead and it'll be ready when you arrive, but there's no guarantee you'll get a seat in time to make being proactive worth your while. Another bit of advice: Don't confuse this popular place with The Original Pancake House -- there's no connection. This is a greasy spoon diner replete with jukebox, vinyl booths and a service counter that parallels the dining area and kitchen. You're seated right smack in the middle of the action, so to speak. But as far as ambience goes, there is none.

Besides the breakfast implied in the name, Original Hotcake offers a lunch and dinner menu featuring items like basic salads, sandwiches, burgers, steaks, fries and even milkshakes. So what makes this place so hot? It's open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Also adding to the appeal are generous portions of artery-choking omelets, hefty pancakes, crispy waffles and the increasingly hard-to-find biscuits and gravy. Can't decide? Get a combination plate with ham, eggs and pancakes or steak, eggs and hash browns. All are helpful in lowering blood-alcohol levels after a night of overindulgence. It's not the greatest food at the best prices, but it's always an entertaining place to eat and gawk until someone stares or scares you out of your seat. -- Jo Ostgarden

  • Best Breakfast!

The Cherry Kajafa Crepes with a heaping side of real whipped cream is my favorite! Fresh strawberries & whipped cream are yummy too. We go to the Barbur Blvd. location which is closed on Mondays & Tuesdays and usually has a long line waiting for the limited seating. A community table is available for singles who don't mind sitting with strangers. The old-fashioned farmhouse atmosphere and waitresses in cute, pink aprons are a step back to the 50's. The Dutch Baby (German) pancakes are huge and can be stuffed with cinnamon apples if you like. The coffee is excellent and served with half & half. They don't take debit cards, so bring cash or checks. It's totally worth the wait!

this place has a special recipe for its one-of-a-kind hotcakes! if you are looking for a unique place to take someone new to the area or if you just want some good old homecooked, greasy-spoon kind of food, or a strawberry waffle or hotcakes from their special recipe batter.....this is the ONLY place in the pdx area to find this kind of food and for the ambiance.....come on man!!! no other can compare. i suppose it is all in the eys of the beholder but this place ROCKS!!! also good for the night life people of pdx who are looking to split their alcohol content in half by adding solid food to their diet. i've been going here for 15+ years!

  • No Ambience, Me Arse!

How can you say this joint lacks ambience? The Hotcake House, refuge for zillions of us, day or night, OOZES ambience as thick as the fake maple syrup! Sometimes a gal needs hearty fare to keep that blood from flowing too freely through the arteries. The MAYBE a bit overpriced grub is more than offset by the human comedy performed nightly for years. And never forget this: THE PANCAKES ARE THE BEST ON PLANET EARTH!
