On weekends, neighborhood early risers definitely have the hometown advantage at this hot little Sellwood breakfast spot. Due to the layout, the quarters can start to feel kind of cramped during peak hours. But there's no reason to suffer the wait. Fat Al's serves breakfast well after noon -- in fact, breakfast is all it serves.

There are good reasons this place is so popular -- namely, good food and great prices. Folks with kids will find added value -- like a harmonica- packing volunteer who keeps the pace upbeat and moving, and crayons and paper ready for hand out. It's the solid comfort food, however, that's the real draw. The no-frills breakfasts include homemade jam and biscuits, eggs with tasty home browns (which are actually home fries) and several excellent egg and toast combos. Omelets feature fresh ingredients and flavor-enhancing items like feta, sundried tomatoes, avocado and sharp cheddar.
