On weekends, neighborhood early risers definitely have the hometown advantage at this hot little Sellwood breakfast spot. Due to the layout, the quarters can start to feel kind of cramped during peak hours. But there's no reason to suffer the wait. Fat Al's serves breakfast well after noon -- in fact, breakfast is all it serves.

There are good reasons this place is so popular -- namely, good food and great prices. Folks with kids will find added value -- like a harmonica- packing volunteer who keeps the pace upbeat and moving, and crayons and paper ready for hand out. It's the solid comfort food, however, that's the real draw. The no-frills breakfasts include homemade jam and biscuits, eggs with tasty home browns (which are actually home fries) and several excellent egg and toast combos. Omelets feature fresh ingredients and flavor-enhancing items like feta, sundried tomatoes, avocado and sharp cheddar. For those with an appetite, try the bottomless bowl of oatmeal, a heavy supply of pancakes with real maple syrup or the Grinder omelet, packed with a ton of ingredients and smothered in gravy.

If you want great food, in a great atmosphere, and great people... this is the place. I am from the east coast where the place to gather is a diner, and this is the best on the west coast. ENJOY

  • Very Average food

I have been there twice. The first time the food was awesome. I went back with 4 members of my family for a family outing. The service was horrible. The server placed two other people who we didn't know at our table. The food was bland and cold. The biscuits (which they are supposedly known for) were cold, hard and seemed like they were a day old. I won't go back.

Very small place but the food was excellent for the price and the quality was supberb! The waitress was very friendly and interacted with the kids. Not a fancy place but nice people and GREAT food for the $$. Kids meal was VERY reasonable in price and huge portions! Kids ate everything! Will definately go again. They only accept cash or check but there is an ATM a few doors down. LOVED IT!!

Great food, a few of the wait staff are moody, but great food, worth the attitude

Can’t get a better breakfast in Portland.

  • Best traditional breakfast in town.

They use FRESH potatoes for the hashbrowns, nothing dried or frozen. Eggs and potatoes are fried in CLARIFIED BUTTER, not Grill Mix like at Denny's. Not fancy, but top quality ingredients, well cooked.

  • AMAZING!!

This place is delicious. Yeah, you may come by after church on a Sunday and see a line of people, just waiting to have a taste of there AMAZING bisquits and gravy. (highly recommended!) but I urge you to stay... and wait. It will DEFINENTLY be worth it. Oh, and when they shut down @ 2pm, jump on over to the Tea-Riffic Bento right across. (same owner) HUGE portions and delicious!

No fancy decor. Great service & the best eggs benedict I've ever had. Go on a weekday mid morning.
