Any sketchy vibe you may pick up from the shabby exterior of Billy Ray's Neighborhood Dive Bar or its surrounding environs should be immediately defused by the huge, yellow happy-faces painted on the side of the building. These, thankfully, can be taken at face-value: non-sketchy mirth awaits inside this converted house, whose first floor sports a bar where cheap, cheap Pabst and Henry's are the drinks-du-jour and the jukebox plays the greatest hits of punk and new wave. Up the stairs is a pool table and a proliferation of comfy furniture that can be (and is) easily cleared away for nightly concerts (which are free of cover charge on Saturdays). Thanks to its increasingly diverse performance calendar, what was once a strictly neighborhood bar is now being discovered by the rest of the city. -- Randy Riggs
