Despite the spooky-sounding name, the BOG, as it's more generally called, offers a friendly respite on the upper Hawthorne drag. The narrow, galley-like bar offers pinball, pool (free before 8PM during happy hour) and pub food and gives way onto one of Portland's most oddly charming patios in the alley space between several tall buildings. Looking up at the faraway sky, customers can trick themselves into thinking that they're anywhere -- anywhere cold and rainy that is. In the past, they had to take advantage of the lengthy and inexpensive beer selections to warm themselves in the cold night. But with the alcohol board spirits on its side, the BOG has a newly procured full liquor license, which will allow for gin and tonics to take the edge off. -- Audrey Van Buskirk
