With a wink toward the areas history as red light district, the Surly Girl screams Old West bordello with a sassy, spicy and spirited flair. A playful cowgirl motif plays throughout the menu, artwork and bric-a-brac along the bar. A diverse and unpretentious drinkers (which gets younger and rowdier as the night goes on) gather around the dozen or so tables and long bar in the front. Audiophiles cram into the smaller gathering spot in the rear to hear DJs and live music. The space is cozy and warm, thanks to the bordello-beaded light fixtures and the gigantic shimmering chandelier that dominates the front entrance. The eclectic menu ranges from down-home comfort foods (Frito pie with macaroni and cheese) to skewed takes on old favorites (spicy peanut butter and banana sandwich) to vegetarian takes on the most unvegetarian of dishes (meatless Italian sausage pizza made with veggie sausage.) The bar offers an impressive 24 beers on tap, and a better-than-average selection of wines by the glass. If you still want to pay to hold some feminine company close to you, order the Shady Lady, the Madame or the Salty Wench.
