Although Northland has been invaded by megamalls and housing developments, a small eatery like El Mariachi still endures. Why? A simple formula: It's always open and easy on the budget. You'll probably hear much Spanish spoken here, as many patrons seem to be of Mexican descent, which lends an air of credence to its longevity. The menu is extensive and far-reaching despite the eatery's small size and inconspicuous decor, which consists of a few sombreros and blankets on the walls and the obligatory blaring TV. Offerings range from breakfast, which includes huevos (eggs) made a half-dozen ways with Mexican sausage, ranchero sauce or veggies, as well as plates of steak, fajitas and enchiladas -- all of which come with rice, beans and a garnish salad. What you may not find elsewhere, though, are tortas, Mexican-style sandwiches with large, soft buns filled with steak, ham, eggs, sausage and the occasional bologna. Even routine items such as tacos can be stuffed with cesos (brains), tripas (tripe, or stomach lining) and lengua (tongue), in addition to the usual chicken and pork. Or play it safe with vegetarian enchiladas or a shrimp tostada. At least you won't be second-guessing what might be in your taco.

The price is right, and delicious food! They even have a cooler with all kinds of imported mexican pop and nectar juices (they take me back to Reynosa, Mexico). I live on the South side of Columbus, and it would be nice to have El Mariachi a bit closer to home. I would be there everyday!

This is definately one of my favorite Mexican eateries! No "Don Pablos" hype here and everything has that home cooked look and taste. The atmophere is pure Southern Texas roadside and all of the meals are fresh and appealing to the eye. I have never been dissapointed at this simple but thoroughly enjoyable restaurant. Go there once and you will be hooked like me! I highly recommend the beef and/or pork tacos and the REAL homemade tamales (complete with corn husk). Actually I recommend you try whatever your favorite Mexican dish might be. Check out this diamond in the rough, I don't think you will be disapointed.
