Columbus has seen an influx of upscale ice cream parlors, both national chains and local shops. Now, you can score another one for the locals: Denise's, which boasts handmade, eclectic flavors and doesn't skimp on quantity, quality or ingredients. (Even the samples are generous, although rare is the soul that leaves without indulging in at least one scoop.) With 20-some years of experience making ice cream in Boston, Stan Zafran, who owns the shop with his wife, Denise, relocated to Columbus. Flavors are intense: Killer Chocolate is said to resemble bittersweet Godiva candy; cheesecake is made from the genuine stuff that comes from New York. Others contain real alcohol: Bailey's Irish Cream is made with whiskey, and Guinness is a malt-and-barley confection mixed with the actual beer. Not to be overlooked are sorbets such as blood orange, whose ingredients are imported from France; and sugar-free, low-carb offerings. You'll also find different kinds of frozen yogurt, with 2 percent butterfat. And get this: The chocolate-chip-cookie dough reportedly has 29 calories and reduced fat, in case you're trying to lose that weight. Yeah, right.
