Since the early 1970s, Dante's has been a neighborhood staple. The family-owned pizzeria attracts regulars and passersby lured by the smell of award-winning slices. Yes, the atmosphere is fuggedable: a few tables and chairs almost eclipsed by a large light fixture and a video game. But the staff is small-business friendly and the floor is so clean that, were a slice to slip off your plate, you'd think twice before abandoning it. Everything served is fresh, from dough to sauces to the centerpiece of Dante's trademark one-meatball spaghetti (you can get more for less than $1 each). The sausage and the ravioli are both packed in-house. And there really is no better alternative to the 1-800 delivery chains' gimmick-pizzas than a Dante's pie with anchovies, hot peppers, or capacolla. And pepperoni, of course: always predictable, but Dante's delectable version is proof positive that there's an ocean of difference between simple and simplistic. -- Sandra Gurvis
