Since its opening in the early 1980s, this popular eatery has drawn a steady crowd, particularly those of the fine wine and olive oil infused persuasion. Customers have two choices: the formal, wood-paneled dining room with its elevated levels and brass railings or the spacious bar with its checkerboard floor and bright ambiance. Either way, you'll be highly visible, so if you're with a new love or decide to participate in the open mic, you'll likely hear about it the next day. Those who come for the food have a wide range of selections. Salads alone range from Caesar to spinach, Mediterranean to mozzarella. The dinner menu is just as varried and selections include seared maple leaf duck breast, roasted chicken, filet of beef, blackened tuna, horseradish-encrusted sea scallops, among others. And there's lots of pasta, from marinara to pomodoro to fettuccine, while the pizzas are loaded with exotica such as an array of wild mushrooms and boursin cheese. Later on there's often a jazz band in the bar, a perfect end note to a one-stop interlude.

  • As bad as it gets

Had to wait an hour and a half for raw scallops, crab cakes that were deep fried (couldn't identify crab in them), fatty lamb chops and a seafood stew that had burnt tomato sauce. The server dissappeared for a good 45 minutes during out protracted event, leaving us without water, bread, or a refill on wine. The two hour event was one of the worst dining experiences we have had in Columbus. The manager, although was very sorry, didn't make up for the poor food and service.

The live music brings us to the Monk frequently. Whether we have a meal or just hang out at the bar we always have a great time!

  • Monk is the Best!

    Review rating : 5out of 5   kareymu - 01/22/2006

We recently discovered Bexley's Monk and it has become one of our favorites! The menu is excellent with a wide variety of options from lighter fare like salads and sandwiches to full dinners. Our favorites: Greek salad, Lamb Chops, and the Filet Mignon. The ambiance of the wood booths and paneling is so cozy and inviting we never want to leave!

  • Great Food, Wine & Live Piano

    Review rating : 5out of 5   dculstad - 01/20/2006

We've been fans of the Monk for years! Always love the food and often find ourselves sitting around the piano enjoying the live music of Pete Tender when we're there on the weekends.

  • Not what it was.

We have long, individually, and together, been fans of the Bexley Monk. Aside from the ambience, food, and location, they always were very classy about what they did. In the last year, however, we have had two poor experiences out of two. First, we became ill after eating there, and I called to inform them, not to complain. Their attitude was "it couldn't possibly be our food - WE don't select that kind of food." The chef's wife gave that answer and incorrectly told me you can't get food poisoning that quick. Later her husband, the chef, had the same attitude. Thinking and hoping that was a fluke, we did return because we liked it so much before. We had reservations and were seated quickly, however, it was 35 minutes before we were waited on and another 45 before we got any food. The waitress kept blaming a large party of 30 or so in the other room. No attempt to ask how we were doing or check on us during the meal. The couple across from us came later and got served first. An older couple that also had to wait was upset and she glibly gave the same excuse. Finally, in one of their ads in The Other Paper, they suggest that it is the place to be seen and that is why you should go there. Actually, the food is still good, it is just the rest that is not. Seems to be an attitude thing from the top down. If a place is a place to be seen - you don't have to tell people that. If that is all you have to hang your hat on . . .

Very disappointing. This used to be our favorite place.
