Dark and moody as black velvet, yet without the Elvis imagery to cheese it up, La Cave du Vin remains the East side's sophisticated and ever-so-slightly subversive enclave for wine and spirits. The staff here is knowledgeable and able to match palates to wines, whether one's culinary vocabulary includes phrases like "peppery and aggressive with notes of cherry" or the more direct "cheap and red." The beer selection features beverages from up the street and far beyond -- although there is still no selection of light beers, never mind any of the low-carb variety. Speaking of not being on a diet, La Cave du Vin offers an assortment of cheese boards ranging from the basic to the elaborate, all artfully presented, most with dried fruit and chocolate. Olive and tomato tapenade or bread served with olive oil round out the snack selections. The Cave has added a cocktail menu, with the basic fancy martinis plus a few more elaborate recipe imports from clubs on the east coast.
