Haagen-Dazs, eat your heart out. No ice cream is richer or more luxurious than Cincinnati's pride, Graeter's. Started by a German immigrant in 1870, it's still a family business, and the ice cream is still made by a laborious process in which workers use hand-carved paddles to scrape the ice cream from "French pots," the earliest ice-cream makers manufactured. Other machines whip air into the mix; these don't, resulting in a firm texture and creamy taste. It's fun to watch someone eat one of the amazing chip flavors, such as black- raspberry chocolate chip, for the first time, because nobody can believe the virtual boulders of high-quality chocolate concealed in the ice cream could be that big. Graeter's is a beloved fixture in most Cincinnati neighborhoods, and even the newer stores have an old-fashioned soda- fountain feel.

Greaters is great ! UDF is good if you want to fill your car up and want a dip fast!

If you need to get your ice cream fix while you are in or live in Cincinnati go to either Greaters or UDF. I like Greaters donuts and iced cookies myself. Razberry chocolate chip is addictive

I discovered Graeters when I came to Cincy to attend the Conservatory of Music in 1986. I had never had such awesome ice cream and haven't had any that compares since. (Living overseas in the mid-90s, i discovered Italian gelato which is totally different but my 2nd favorite frozen treat). I introduced my family to Graeters when they visited me in Cincy, and often brought it in Graters dry ice containers on trips home to TN. Now living back in TN, my family and I make 2 trips a year to my hubby's family in Cleveland. We stop at Graters coming and going and bring plenty home with us, in dry ice packs of course. It's pricey, but boy is it worth it. My friends here in TN are amazed by the creaminess of it, and the huge chocolate "chips" always amaze. My favorite? Mint chocolate chip with the bittersweet chocolate sauce, which I always purchase there too.

Things yah miss from Home

I am not much for rating this or that to each his own. I have lived all over the country from Boston to my present location in SoCal. From the curious french pot process....to growing up with chips the size of candy bars...who knew later in life everyone in the country would crave not chips but chunks of chocolate, and dark chocolate to boot......we in Cincinnati took it for granted. Eastside or West every Graeters is packed out the door on those warm summer evenings. Hey I love UDF too....but folks it aint Graeters...Man I may have to send for a shipment now.....

This is simply the WORST ice cream I have ever tasted and I've had most of the places in Cincinnati. This stuff is pasty and way too thick. UDF does better.

The chain has various locations within Cincinnati, but the best location is nestled in the heart of the Hyde Park area located near boutique shopping and electic dining venues. Graeters is a unique opportunity to discover original flavors while still enjoying more traditional options. Each mouth full is filled with large chunks of pleasure, whether it be toffee, chocolate chunks, cookies or peppermint pieces. Chocolate chunk ice cream Not in many years have I dropped a cone of ice cream, but I surely would cry on a hot summer day if I dropped my double scoop of chocolate chunk. Chunks should be candy bar-sized
