It's not clear what's older, the legend or the cheesecake. This is the third in the family of delis and bakeries; the original Junior's was opened in the 1950s by Harry Rosen in Brooklyn, sons Walter and Marvin expanded a second to Grand Central Station, and now this one near Times Square is run by grandson Allen. The unabashed nostalgia of the original remains intact - a "museum wall" bombards diners with Brooklyn memorabilia like "The Honeymooners" photos and murals of the Cyclone and Ebbets Field. Bocce ball lights hang from the ceiling while baseballs autographed by visiting celebrities are screwed into the wall. Because of its proximity to other steakhouses, the menu has trimmed the fat on some stuff (lobster tails are gone, but the Roumanian tenderloin is still here, thankfully). Dishes are heavy on the deli, like corned beef and baked Virginia ham, and barbeque, like the ribs, chicken and shrimp combo. Such Old World specialties as beef ghoulash over noodles and cheese blintzes go over big with the tourist and pre-theater crowd, who have finally stopped kvetching about having to schlep to Brooklyn.

I VISITED JUNIORS IN BROOKLYN, OFF OF FLATBUSH AVENUE AND AFTER THE FIRST TIME I KEPT GOING BACK, BESIDES THE CHEESE CAKE, THEY HAVE AN AWESOME HAMBURGER AND SOUP (DURING THE WINTER. AS A NATIVE NEW YORKER, I AM VERY PROUD OF THIS ESTABLISHMENT AND WISH THEM GREAT CONTINUED SUCCESS. TONY FUSTER, U.S.NAVY, RETIRED.

  • Tourists in New York

    Review rating : 1out of 5   PABRRD - 05/30/2008

We were on a tour in New York from Illinois. Junior's was set up for one of our dinners before the play on May 16th.

We were treated like cattle. When we would ask for anything after ordering, it went unheard. We were supposed to receive certain things with the meal - Like sauerkraut, pickles, and such, and when we kept asking for it, a tiny bowl with 2-1/2 pickles came out to our table of 8.

The waiters were supposed to be bringing something for one member of the group, and as we were waiting for their order our coffee cups(full cups) were taken away without us realizing it.

The waiters had no personality, and one griped about how late he work and how much of a drive home he had.

We could have gotten better service at McDonald's.

As far as family friendly, I don't think so. I wouldn' t put my children through that, I don't care how great they say the food is.

In the write-up it talks about the nostalgia on the walls - You can't really walk around and look because they pack the people in and the only view you have is what is right at your table - Ours was the window.

I would not suggest that any tourist go here for the character this place advertises. It just is not worth it.

I feel they just want your money, and don’t care if you enjoy the experience or not.
