Rumor has it this cattle ranch New York staple was named when Jackson Heights-natives James and Chris Meskouris dusted off a National Geographic story on the famed Wyoming town in their soon-to-be restaurant's basement. If they only knew what a legend they'd created. Since 1972, this cowboy-themed grill, which showcases James' affinity for cowboy art, movie posters and paraphernalia on its walls, has spurred more than half a dozen grilling locations in the city, including the popular Upper East and Upper West side destinations. Think big and familiar salads with ranchero names, like the Wyoming, Cheyenne or Woulia Boulia Salad (their version of Cobb), Bronco chicken sandwiches, fajitas and a stable-full more. But the kicker here is arguably the best burger in town: a huge, seven ounce, made-to-order monster of meat that sizzles, minces and melts in your mouth as you buck up from the outdoor patio and ride off into the spaghetti Western sunset. -- Yon Motskin

  • NOTA VERY PROFESSIONAL OWNER

    Review rating : 1out of 5   Smp389 - 08/31/2008

Although the burgers are fairly good, the owner is horrible. My family was there on 8/28/08, and the owner was on the phone with someone screaming and cursing at the top of his lungs. I was very upset to hear this language, I was there with my young children and his actions were completely uncalled for. This was no way for a business man to act in front of a full restaurant, at lunch time. I will be sure NOT to visit again. Donovans Burgers should have been number one.

  • #1 in New York? Are you kidding???

Jackson Hole is perfect proof that bigger is NOT always better. Its basically a pound of unseasoned, greasy ground beef, with a bun that is (eventually) glued to it, because of all the grease. If that is your idea of a good burger you'll love Jackson Hole.

A great place for those of you that like HUUUUGE, way too much meat on the burger is at Cozi Soup and Burger on Astor Place and Broadway.

My handsdown favorite burger in New York is at the Blarney Stone on 3rd ave and 44th. Its a dinky Irish Pub, but they make the BEST burger. Its made on an open flame chargrill, and its absolutely delicious. Really big (Maybe half pound) but the meat is not 3-4 inches tall like Jackson Hole... So you can actually hold it and eat it comfortably without straining your jaw.

How is Peter Luger's burger not even on the list?

  • Worst burger ever!!!

    Review rating : 1out of 5   MAF1733 - 07/25/2008

My family went to Jackson Hole on the upper west side about 2 years ago. It was, by far, the WORST burger I ever had tasted. They cook it by throwing a slab of chopped meat on a grill and covering it with a bowl to keep the steam in. It was so bad, I actually had to order a different entree.
