It's no surprise that this Upper West Side dive, basically an indoor hot dog stand, has been packing them in since the 1970s. Its prices are still circa the 1970s. There's really only one reason to come here: cheap hot dogs, round-the-clock. At just over a dollar, the broiled or grilled beef hot dogs are the best value in town, especially when you add on sauerkraut, onions, mustard and other accoutrements. What makes it even more unique is that everyone washes it down with a tropical drink -- like pina colada or papaya juice. The decor is more 'gray' than 'papaya' and about as inspiring as a tire iron -- grungy and neglected. Many connoisseurs of the beef dog swear by Gray's (or swear when they can't get Gray's), but even occasional users can appreciate the Recession Special -- two dogs, one drink: $3.50.

I've only eaten from this location and I don't think they are any better then a street vendor... Might as well get a dirty water dog and save some cash!

There is nothing more NYC then Gray's Papaya on the Upper West Side. Most people think NYC hot dogs are the ones on the street in a car and its not. These are grilled to perfection, and the taste is unbelievable. When ever in NYC go to gray's on 72nd st and broadway.

Th best In N.Y.C.
Whenever I visit New York, for the show's, great restaurants, & culture, I alway's make It a point , to stp here several times , for the great deal , of two hot dogs, & Papaya juice. It's part of going to N.Y. for me, & I love It!
About the Grey at Greenwich Village...

the atmosphere is real New York there in the middle of the night (it never closes) especially after bar hopping.I love inviting outtowners or tourists with me for 'breakfast' after the bars close,it never fails to impress them with our lively nightlife....even at 4am.
