Check your pretensions at the door of this Greenwich Village institution.

The Scene
Back in the '60s, the likes of Hendrix and Dylan played here before they were famous. These days, a youthful mix of students and tourists dances in the aisles to the sounds of the Cafe Wha Band, which pumps out high-energy, workman-like covers of everything from the Beatles to Marley. Low ceilings and tables crammed close to the stage make for a cramped, intense atmosphere.

The Draw
The house band is in residence from Wednesday to Friday; Mondays play host to one of the city's more popular Brazilian nights, Tuesdays a funk band takes over and assorted guests perform the other nights of the week. You can also expect to see various warm-up acts, ranging from comedians to drag performers. A standard range of beers and cocktails are available, along with a menu of Middle Eastern-flavored snacks.

There's no cover on Wednesdays. On Mondays and Tuesdays, it's $10; Thursdays, $5; Fridays, $12 and Saturdays, $15.

When to Go
Get here before 10pm on weekends. The good seats fill up fast, and so does the line around the block.

With one of the most talented house bands in the city, Cafe Wha is the perfect place to sing along to some standards with a group of your closest friends. While you wouldn't go to this spot to meet new people or get into long conversations (the music can be loud), you probably will enjoy some interesting open acts, good tunes, and a fun ambience. Try to make reservations ahead of time, as the place can get packed pretty quickly.

I made reservation on web site for 4 people. I recieved WRITTEN CONFIRMATION saying there would be no cover charge. My bill recieved was for 4 cover charges and with the mandatory tip and tax it came out to an increase of $34.87. I was under duress to pay or I wouldn't be able to leave.

When I was leaving they also tried to take my itemized receipt as I wanted it as proof. Furhtermore on the TV screen it constantly flashed No Cover Wednesday or Sunday.

The manager Gil was very nasty to someone said it was a holiday. However no where does it exclude Nov 23 or any holiday. The reservation paper also shows 2 days which are holiday (Halloween, NYE where the price is different, not NOV 23rd

    Treated badly and overcharged. AVOID!

I've gone to Cafe Wha at least once each year and it NEVER EVER disappoints. One of the best cover bands I've ever heard, great wings, the crowd is friendly and always gets into the music. Plan a trip there one day. You won't be disappointed!

I experienced Cafe Wha for the 1st time last night and it was AWESOME!!! The band is great - they engage the audience and make it fun to be there. They sing such a variety and are a source of great entertainment! The comdians were funny too! And you can "eat for cheap" as they give you a wide assortment to choose from! Get there early though - they really pack 'em in!!!

I can only agree with the others. Cafe Wha? ist the place to be. The band is awesome every night, every week all year long. It's by far the best house band I've ever seen. Not only are they great musicians but also great entertainers. They will make you laugh plenty :-)
Food and drinks really are inexpensive... And don't worry about not getting a seat. Once you get there, all you want to do is DANCE anyway just like everyone else does! The place gets packed, people start dancing in the aisles! It's a great crowd! You have to go there! You'll have the best time!
