If you've ever spent an intoxicating evening carousing in the courtyard of the 56th Fighter Squadron, hanging out at one of Long Island's prime meat markets, perhaps you've noticed the 'other side' as you walk in -- the side with the warm wood decor, a roaring fireplace and the strains of '40s music coming over the PA system instead of the house music emanating from the bar section. Welcome to one of the area's premier theme restaurants, a cozy enclave with generic but well-done American fare and an aviation/World War II theme that's unmatched on the Island. But it's the view of Republic Airport and the 56th's World War II fighter planes that will impress you the most. The fare is a decent roster of American and Italian dishes.

WHAT CAN I SAY
FOOD TOO EXPENSIVE, DOESN'T EVEN RESEMBLE THE SERIES "MASH", I WAS DISAPPOINTED, WON'T GO BACK. SORRY GUYS, IT'S JUST ANOTHER OVER PRICED PLACE TO EAT.
CHYANNEAdd CommentNice interesting atmosphere
I went on Sunday for brunch. Really rustic interior -- very historically interesting. Good food but overpriced. Will go back but for a special occasion.
SUNDAY BUFFET 3/2/08
glad I decided to judge for myself rather than by others opinions posted here. had the sunday brunch today & was pleasantly surprised that the staff was courteous, helpful & accomodating. The rustic atmosphere is perfect & the grounds are well kept. I will definitely return another time.
Judge for yourself...Valentine's day 2008

My husband and I spent Valentine's Day 2008 at the 56th. It was horrible. The food was expensive. $48.95 for a steak dinner. The waitress had an attitude, but the host was nice. The place was empty and it took over 45 minutes to get our dinner. I will never go back there. It needs to be knocked down. What a disaster. It used to be nice, but not anymore. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Very Nice Thanksgiving buffet
My family and I have enjoyed some lovely Thanksgivings at this restaurant. They have a wonderful buffet spread and the food is delicious. Sometimes the line to get the food is a bit long but it's really worth it (and the price)
I have not found they rushed you at all contrary to another poster-I do know you are supposed to have about 1 1/2 hours per seating but again I've never felt rushed.
The view while sitting near a window of airplanes taking off and landing is extra nice too if you happen to get seated there.
It's always crowded so I"m sure I"m not the only one that enjoy this place.amazing!
The food is incredibly and the service is decent. I don't remember ever having a single problem with the service. Totally worth the price!
Behind The Scenes

I worked in the kitchen when I was a kid, 25 years ago. They hired me even though I was only 14 and their policy was 16. There was a persistant grime smell that stuck to your clothes. The kitchen was very dirty. The head chefs were alcoholics and were prone to unprovoked tirades directed at any and all subordinates. Drinking during work was commonplace. Smoking while preparing food was the norm. Food that fell to the floor was just picked up and put on the plate or cooked. It was an eye opening experience. After reading the reviews, it seems that the overall attitude hasn't changed all that much.
rude, crude and dirty

The management is rude, the place is a pig sty and they are obsessed with getting you out in an hour and a half...they bug you to leave, even when the filthy place is empty. Not a soul waiting for a table, empty dining room, empty parking lot but they wanted us out. We finally left and will NEVER return.
EHHHHHHHH!!
Paid $100 for 2 boys, wife and I. barley good food, seated past and empty dinning room, far far away from sunday buffet. they were more worried about telling me I have 1.5 hours to eat and finding my reservation in an empty restaurant than serving us. Not worth 1/2 the price.
