Hot Rod's was housed inside Joann's, a no-frills bar in Mine Hill. In such nondescript quarters, the attention to detail in the 'Q' is totally unexpected. They're moving headquarters to Wharton, but you'll still become an instant believer when the warm cornbread arrives at your table with maple butter. It is hard to move on, but the wings here are an absolute must, as they are cooked in Hot Rod's special sauce. They are spicy, but with an underlying sweetness that is a secret of the chef. Other macho and messy favorites include the pork ribs, smoked in-house to perfection, and the huge pulled-pork sandwich, a messy handful of tender pork and special sauce. With all this meaty chow, you'll probably want to balance your meal with some of the fantastic vegetable sides. The airy hush puppies, creamy coleslaw, peanut oil french fries, and succulent slow-baked beans all count as vegetable dishes, don't they?

Finally, don't have to travel far for great BBQ. This place has everything, and it's all SMOKED! Great ribs and chicken, great atmonsphere, good service, and resonable prices. Parking has been a problem on one of my visits, but usually I don't have a problem at all. Highly reccomend.

Crappy location, but I was very impressed with the food. Had the chicken, ribs, and meatloaf. Meatloaf was very unique. Ribs had a great smoky taste. Chicken was ok. WOuld definitely go back.

Best BBQ I've had since famous SHORTY'S BBQ in Miami. You know, the place that Jackie Gleason used to go to after every show in the 60's!

Seriously, I've had smoked Brisket elsewhere & this has to be the best! And his sauce was so great that I almost gave up on the BBQ - JUST FOR THE SAUCE!!

  • Excellent BBQ

We have been to Hot Rod's numerous times and we love the food! My husband raves about the ribs and the steak and cheese wrap. The wings are great, sweet but with a kick! I love their pulled pork and pulled chicken wrap. The cole slaw is perfect. They also have a great selection of beer and great margaritas!
We will continue to frequent Hot Rod's. We love the food, atmosphere and people!

I have been to this place 5 times, and have had 4 differnt entrees (had to have the ribs twice, try them and you'll see why), and each meal was exceptional. Steak, Jerk Chicken, Meatloaf, all delicious. I was suprised not only by the ineresting selection of hot sauces availible to spice things up(they came in a bucket!), but by the variety and selection of beers availible as well. Not being familiar with the "smoking" process I had a couple of quesitons, and it became evident by the answers I received that these people love what they are doing, which likely explains why the food is so good. I will be back for more.

  • What a Find!

Saw the article about Hot Rods in the Morris County Health magazine and decided to give them a try based on the write up. My wife and I are glad we did! As soon as we walked in we knew it was going to be a good experience - cool decor, a fun vibe and of course the smell of delicious bbq! Our server was very friendly and he was more than helpful with offering recommendations and suggestions. The margarittas were excellent, and the Cadillac-style one I had packed a nice punch as well! We started with the drunken shrimp (after devouring the complimnetary cornbread and maple butter) and it was great. Spicy, yet slighlty sweet, and the sauce they are in was excellent. For dinner I had the full slab with garlic mashed potatoes - the ribs were tender and juicy - just the right amount of suace - and huge! I couldn't even finish the slab. The garlic mashed were creamy and light, with homemade gravy on top. My wife had the 1/2 Jamacian Jerk Chicken special with the baked beans. Chicken was moist and falling off the bone. The jerk sauce was spicy yet not overbearing. THe baked beans were delicious and sweet, and my wife called them "desert". Our waiter let us know to please sign the guest book - if you list your birthday they send you a bday card with a free dinner entre coupon! Nice touch. All in all a great night out - we will definitely be back, and will be telling all our friends. Keep up the great work!

  • Better than Home Cooking!

The ribs are the most tender I've ever eaten! The ribs are not gooey and sticky like most...rather they are seasoned to perfection and moist...they practically fall right off the bone. The same goes for the wings. The service is friendly and attentive without being pushy. This is an all around great place, whether you stay to eat-in or order take-out, it can't be beat. You have got to try this place!!!

  • May be Hot, but Also very Dry

    Review rating : 1out of 5   superflyguybry - 02/01/2006

I had the pulled pork sandwich, it is usually one of my favorites. I was stationed in the South when I was in the military and the pulled pork was always a delicious treat. Unfortunately at Hot Rod's, it was like and old rope. It may have been moist a day or two earlier, but if I didn't have a pint of beer to wash it down I would have choked to death. The baked beans were dry too, the consistency of spackle...and they tasted like someone spilled a bottle of liquid smoke into the pot. My girlfriend had the chicken fingers and they were mummified. Maybe dehydrating the meat is a specialty here. Sad to see that Morris County can't come up with better BBQ than this.

  • WOW......THIS PLACE IS AWEFUL

    Review rating : 1out of 5   elmoblatch - 01/31/2006

The food was aweful. The ribs and chicken were dry, even the cornbread stunk. Oh and my mashed potatoes were COLD and the service stunk. The bartender we had was pure evil, some whoville looking chick from The Grinch had nothing but an attitude all night. Wow, I definitely won't be going back to this craphole!!!!!!!!!
