People get effusive about the Summit Diner, and with good reason. In a downtown full of restaurants striving to be chi-chi, the Summit is totally down to earth, and a memorable place to visit or to designate as your own local hangout. It's friendly and easygoing, full of local characters, and has an aura of history. You are reminded that no amount of clever design can replicate the atmosphere generated by 60 years of continuous usage. Summit Diner is famed for its breakfasts -- heaping towers of pancakes served with sausage and eggs. On Saturday mornings you'll have to wait outside for your turn at one of the eight booths or a seat at the counter. There are all the usual lunch and dinner items -- Taylor ham and cheese, turkey clubs, chicken soup or Yankee Pot Roast, done with an old-fashioned disregard for cholesterol counting.

  • horrible service

Went there St. Patrick's Day for breakfast. The waitress comes to our booth and just stands there. Does not say hello, does not ask us what we want - nothing. Lots of attitude on her face. Very odd. We told her our order and I swear, we thought if she had a gun in her apron, she would have pulled it on us. We both ordered the Taylor ham and cheese sandwiches. Two pieces of ham and some cheese on a roll. Very plain and not worth the money. We won't go back.

Only sorry to see it become so popular as lines out the door will ensue. For the money the best breakfast anywhere, but come later in the day and hearty portions of good comfort food are great.

  • Hands down the best breakfast

If you have been living in New Jersey or passing by Summit, you have to stop in for a hearty breakfest the likes that you have never seen before. Seating can be a nusiance though while the owners of the Summit Deli havent changed the seating or added to it since 1938. If you are into a once a week hearty breakfest and not afraid of indulging in a some grease then this is the perfect place. If you a health freak , you better have your grapefruit and 3 miles run as usual. "The Diner" is moderately priced but you get a ton of food for your $$$, if you decide to stop in, you can't go wrong with the bacon, egg, cheese, and potato on a kaiser roll. Enjoy!

Summit Diner is not what it used to be, but what is? Like all good things once the word gets out it's gone. Food has gotten worse, like 2 pcs of taylor ham for 5 bucks!! Been in Summit all of my 44 years, place has changed!! But Diner is still an icon, thats going strong. Reminds me of the Saturday Night live skit,
    Chesseburger, No Coke, Pepsi!!

  • Good but nothing great

    Review rating : 3out of 5   flyingrc12 - 09/07/2005

I typically stop by this diner before work just because it's convienent not because it's fantastic. The breakfast is good, definaetly not the cheapest or cleanest place around. The staff is typically friendly depending on the day and who's working there. Breakfast comes out very quick, not much waiting here for food. Although you get alot of homefries, they are very very plain potatoes, nothing is added at all to these homefries. I was very turned off when I walked in there to eat by myself a few months ago, I was told to sit at the counter that I couldn't sit in a booth. That put a very bad taste in my mouth, I stayed because I was very hungry and didn't want to go somewhere else. In closing, I would only rate this diner good, I have been to many other diners in New Jersey that are far better. I have been told by the locals that the diner has gone down hill in their words.
