One humungous copper kettle announces the presence of this little downtown microbrewery just a half-block from South Orange's train station, a haven for both serious home-brewheads and the casual diner. The Soboti family runs it as an efficient but pleasant ship, tapping a fresh firkin (that's a cask holding about 11 gallons of the good stuff) of ale each Thursday night at the stroke of 7:30PM and maintaining up to eight of their brews on tap at any given moment -- stuff like Bulldog Blonde, Satan Claws Ale, Three Ring I.P.A. and 80 Shilling. They serve a surprisingly gourmet menu, too, thanks to Cindy Soboti's culinary institute training: You can actually start a meal here with fried Blue Point oysters, cilantro shrimp or baked Brie en croute, and continue onward to authentic wursts and sauerbraten, or lamb burgers. Fear not: They do traditional pub fare such as burgers and wings, as well.

  • Very good overall

    Review rating : 4out of 5   auntj7 - 02/27/2007

I went to SHU so I have inhaled every beer the gaslight has made in the past 5 years.

Overall the food is excellent and you can craft a meal for whatever your budget happens to be. Their burgers and pub food are reasonably priced, but a lot of the other stuff gets a little stuff for a bar.

The beers are great. Warning: if you are a coors light or bud man, this place is not for you. They only have miller lite and amstel lite if those types of beers are your thing. Go across the street to Cryan's or Bunny's and you will have a better time.

They also have a lot of TV's and show all the local teams, plus a lot of other stuff including international soccer. During football season there are 4-5 games goin on and the place is packed with fans from all kinds of teams.

Gaslight is also a good place to catch a game of darts or shuffleboard.

One bad thing: Don't EVER expect a free drink.... ever. I never got one in 5 years.

Other good things: Their beer is for sale by the boot, which has like i think 6 or 8 pints in it, for like $13 or 15 i think. The bar area and dining room is separate if you don't want to eat around drunken people, but you can also eat at the bar and there's also several tables in the bar area as well.

Finally, Gaslight isn't super popular with the SHU crowd who are busy getting drunk elsewhere. So if you like a more mature crowd gaslight is your place.

Sorry for rambling but i guarantee this review is spot on.

This is the bar with the best food and drink in town. Everything I have never tried is always great.

The philly burger is the BEST in town!! With very little options in South Orange to eat in town you can count on the brewery to not close their doors any time soon.

  • Finally a place adults!!!!

I have never had a negative experience either...and I find it refreshing that there is a place I can go and not have to be bothered by the inappropriate behavior of ill-bred children. If you want to take your children out go to Chucky-cheese, then they can run around all they like.

As for the food, it is ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!!!! The beer is FANTASTIC!!!! As for liking children....I have seen numerous times when the owner has generously given free desserts to well-behaved children....so I guess its up to those parents to do their job and teach their kids how to act in public.

  • mixed opinions

For some reason, you will find a lot of negativity and mixed opinions about the Gaslight in South Orange.

I, for one, have NEVER been disappointed in the service, attitude, atmosphere, or pretty much anything at the establishment and go there for food and/or drinks about 2-3 times a month.

The food is always FANTASTIC, creative, and delicious, seriously, the tuna club (tuna steak, not salad) is quite possibly one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. The service has always been friendly and inviting from the bartenders and servers. The male owner is much more pleasant than his wife, but I've never had a problem with her.

The only thing that's not always on par is their brewed beer. It has a tendencey to be slightly warm and flat, but I'm not a big beer person. Their wine selection is adequate, and they make the best vodka tonics in the state.

Do not let others' negativity rub off on you. And for the record, I've been seated with someone wearing a tshirt who was asked to remove his hat in the dining room (seriously folks, this is not a problem! - if you want to wear a hat, sit in the bar area!) and it wasn't in a rude or condescending way.

    Enjoy!

the gaslight is one of the most unfriendly places i've been to. the owners are rude to people they don't like, especially those with kids.a lot of us who live in south orange can't understand how they stay in business as most who have gone there don't go back. don't even try to post any of your cmplaints in the online guestbook, they just remove the comments they don't like.
