Beef. Ale. Good. And that about sums up this neighborhood bar hidden right behind South Orange's little main street. In case you were wondering what kind of a bar it is well, they don't leave any doubt. About a block before you get here, you notice that it's painted in the style of an Irish pub, whitewashed with faux beams painted in. Then you see the Harp and Guinness banners. Then you get a look at the kitschy diorama in the window, adulterated with the words -- in case you still haven't gotten it -- "Blarney Spoken Here." Yep, it's an Irish bar, and much more Irish than most in these parts: It's got the interior down to a T, including Astroturf-like carpeting at the entrance, slightly tatty interior decor furnishings and ale-soaked tables. But they cook a mean steak here, too, better than you'd expect -- with nary a dress code anywhere to be found. Unless Blarney is a dress code?

I <3 this bar
My favorite bar of all time! The drinks, food, bartenders, bands and Dj's are all 10's in my book. Have never had a bad time always fun and festive. A must go to in North Jersey.

cryans
i don't know if i would say the drinks or food is 5 stars, however this bar was ranked for being a conversation bar and that it is. A lot of people between 21-mid thirties go here. It also attracts a lot of the college students in the area. I have definitly been there and conversed with people. Its great going with a group of friends. O yeah stay away from their irsh car bombs!
Tale of two places
So far every review about this place has failed to show a complete picture of Cryan's, for it has two faces.
As for the food- it's OKAY. Just OKAY. Not awful and not good. they have a few irish dishes like chicken with blarney and bangers and mash. Like i said nothing special. Drinks are pretty good, they have a fair selection on tap, and the bartenders are usually pretty friendly and make good drinks.
Personally i have never had a problem with service there before, and i went there a lot having just graduated from SHU.
Anyway this is just Cryan's the restaurant- on the weekends and sometimes during weeknights this fairly quiet little Irish pub turns into a MADHOUSE full of seton hall students dancing to loud pop and rock music. Expect a $5 cover charge starting at 9 i think, and you will be ID'd at the door. If you are underage though, come early for dinner and you probably won't get carded. If you can manage to stay inside until people start showing up to drink, you are home free as the bartenders will just begin to assume you were carded at the door..... and if you're wondering, Yes, i have done this plenty of times, lol. This is the only bar in South orange where you have a shot at drinking underage as all the others card aggressively. Sometimes gaslight will throw you out on sight if they dont like you or are already drunk, so be careful.
So the food is ok but be warned- after dinner time it transforms into a frat party, which I admit is a very good time, probably the most "fun" bar in S.O.St. Patrick's Day Soiree
On the busiest day of the year, Cryan's once again, provided a good meal in festive environment. Not sure, about the posts below but the crowd was much fun, meal was tasty, beer was cold, staff was courteous and all for a reasonable fare. Did we miss something else?
Board of Health Issues

I am completely appalled that someone could possibly write such a ridiculous statement about a great family oriented business. I am the biggest freak when it comes to restaurants and food and there is no way that I would go to or rave about any establishment that wasnÂt worth it, I would be the first person to tell you that they are horrible.
CryanÂs Beef and Ale has excellent food and a great atmosphere. Great for family and kids. As for smelling like food when you leave, I do believe that when you are home and mom and dad cook up a great meal you leave smelling like it. That is fine cooking to me.
As for rodents in this restaurant, are you kidding me, the only rodent that you may find is the one that posted the orginal comment. Maybe if you didn't eat out of garbage cans then you could enjoy and appreciate really good food......LOSER!!!
Please go to the Beef and Ale and you will see for yourself that it is a great restaurant. Everyone is very friendly and helpful and the FOOD IS GREAT AND TASTY.RE: Board of Health Issues
This post is truly inaccurate so i feel the need to reply. We have been customers of Cryan's for over 20 years now. We go there for dinner quite often and usually end up sitting at their wonderful, friendly bar for a few cocktails afterwards. Besides that, we have held several parties in their beautiful private party room, from anniversaries to birthdays to christenings to weddings, and the only thing i have ever seen running around there were happy small children! This restaurant is always spic and span and the staff is friendly and always looks neat and professional. As far as the "stench" you are referring to, thats part of the Cryan's unique atmosphere and if you shower the next day like most people do, it will hardly last for days! The food is always excellent and their new menu is outstanding in keeping with their very decent prices. I think the only "rodent" here is the one who wrote this original post. Shame on you!!
Was that meal a joke?

Friday 4/26/02 I went to Cryans (giving it another chance after the last horrible experience) with a few friends. We were seated right away, next to the waiters station and the walkway -making us very much inteh way and incomfortable. But since we were a party of five we left that alone. Then we waited about ten minutes to have our drink order taken, I order a coors light, my friend ordered a Budweiser and was told "No, you'll get a coors light."
When we finally got to order our meal the waitress was so rude I expected a hidden camera gag to be the reason. I ordered the steak sandwich and asked for the cheese and gravy on the side. The waitress folded her arms, looked at me and asked how did I "expect them to do that." Stunned I attempted to explain only to be brushed off for the next persons order (As a former waitress I also noticed that ladies first didn't seem to apply) Then came our appetizers, my suggestion to the restaurant is don't try to branch out your menu when a simple steak sandwich looks like it had been the losing horse at the Meadowlands.
The rest of the meal was just as bad, our meal was a toss up as far as the food itself. My cheeses came on the side, two slices on a plate, complete with dirty smudges on it, but I never got the gravy. And the service stayed awful. We had to flag down our waitress for a second drink order after sitting with empty glasses for most of dinner (again we were right next to the waiter station and the floor where she kept walking past so we were very aware of the other tables and what attention they were getting so if I sound petty trust me I'm not)
The highlight was at the end of the meal when my friend who had ordered a salad for dinner asked to have it wrapped and the waitress asked her "Are you serious".
As that was the second time I got burned there I will never go back, for anything. Nor would I recommend it to my worst enemy.
