College students tend to think they're invincible. And when death seems like such a remote possibility, how on earth could there be any harm in a sandwich made of mozzarella sticks, chicken fingers and french fries smothered in marinara sauce? That's the existential question posed by the "Fat Darrell" sandwich invented by a Rutgers student at the R-U Grill. Certainly you could get fat ordering chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks and french fries separately at Applebee's or Chili's, but only here in New Brunswick can you get them all together on a sub, topped with a few paltry slivers of shredded lettuce and a wan slice of tomato. If the vegetables shudder in fear of their fried bun-mates below, just imagine the horror struck into the hearts (and arteries, and waistlines) of Atkins followers by such a sandwich. You can put pretty much anything on a "Fat" sandwich here, including pork roll. Try a Fat Cat: (two cheeseburgers, french fries, mayo, ketchup, lettuce, tomato, onions,) Fat Elvis (gyro meat, two mozzarella sticks, french fries, white sauce, hot sauce, lettuce, tomato, onions), or Fat Mom (cheesesteak, bacon, egg, french fries, mayo, ketchup, lettuce, tomato, onions). Of course Rutgers coeds stand by these gastrointestinal atrocities, because where else can you get a full week's caloric intake for about $5?

Its not the cleanest place to eat although it was on the Food Network with Al Roaker, the food is pretty good and cheap if you are on a budget.......All I can say is eat at your own risk...

My boyfriend goes there often with his buddies after Thursday night hockey. How about trying a fat goalie?
Hamburger, mozzarella sticks, bacon, and marina sauce! YUMMMMMMY!

  • Why the Fat Darrell?

Okay, first off, don't get a fat sandwich from RU Grill. Make the trip to the grease trucks. Second, why the Fat Darrell? Why not the Fat Philipino, which has cheese steak, chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, french fries, lettuce, hot sauce, and white sauce. However, best sandwich in America. Definitely.

the R U GRILL is the worst place to get food on campus. The grease trucks are the best and make the only real fat cats.

  • What about the Grease Trucks??

    Review rating : 3out of 5   burncycle999 - 11/11/2004

Sure RU Grill is good. But Jimmy's is the place of origin. And they only taste the best at the grease trucks. So don't give all the credit to RU Grill. YEAH GREASE TRUCKS!!

I am astonished at this killer sandwich. I could'nt finish it and even my dog was full. Taste? I'm not sure it is for anyone with a digestive problem.

Jimmy's IS the only place to get a fat cat, and all the Rutgers students know it. The grease trucks are the best! Oh yeah, RU Grill is good too.
