At first glance it seems like a local pub or maybe a wine bar, and it can be -- but Martini is also a full-fledged restaurant with a separate bistro room that's classy and quiet. The filet mignon, piled onto whipped-up potatoes and sided with haricots vert (green beans, dude), draws raves but the seafood is equally impressive: stuff like a seven-spice, Asian-style tuna with ponzu sauce, a breaded cut of cod, a crispy piece of salmon with mint and couscous, or genuine San Francisco-style cioppino packed with lobster, clams, shrimp, scallops, mussels, and even some fish horned in there. Appies, amuse bouches, desserts, and coffees are all as they should be. So are the extra touches: There's live jazz Thursdays and Fridays, a popular prix fixe menu (40 bucks a throw), and they even offer a complimentary intermezzo on the night of performances at the adjacent Paper Mill Playhouse. And yes, Virginia, you can get a martini -- in one of two dozen variations.
