Lovers of Southern barbecue complain that there aren't enough authentic ''Q'' joints in the Garden State. Purists even argue that there really aren't any good pits north of the Mason Dixon line. Big Ed's BBQ is one of only a handful in New Jersey to get the nod from both the dedicated professionals and the amateur eaters of sloppy ribs. Big Ed's claim to fame is its all-you-can-eat ribs, all the time, which feature tender baby backs or spare ribs in a sweet and smoky special brewed sauce. The smell hangs in the air even in the parking lot, where you're introduced to something that resembles a theme-park interpretation of a Southern roadhouse: Large, smiling cartoons line the fences and barnlike exterior, and the inside is a continuation of the over-the-top look with wooden booths, red-and-white-checked vinyl tablecloths, TVs on different channels, and colorful roadside signs. It's the perfect spot for eating orgies and good cheer. Meat is the name of the game here, so the burgers are not too shabby and the hot links are very good. Sides of baked beans, coleslaw and corn on the cob round out your meal ... and your tummy.

Home away from home
Being a transplant from Brooklyn NY, the first glance I had at Big Ed's BBQ was one of comic relief and confusion (you don't see many rib joints in my old stomping ground). When I started entering my teen years, it seemed almost inevitable that Big Ed's would turn into something that will stick with me for the rest of my life. All my friends worked there so therefore I jumped on the bandwagon. From that experience, I've come to respect the establishment for it's pride in what they do. Not to mention gaining great friendships along the way. It's a community staple that will never go away. Anyone who tells me they never tried these succulent, off-the-bone ribs I can safely say is a fool. So the next time you see the flame lights the surround the premises, stop on in. You certainly won't be disappointed.

im also a waitress at big ed's in old bridge, and to be honest, ive read all the complaints, and theyre ALL comical bc they could have been easily remedied if you only let your server know you were unhappy. re-orders fatty? ask for another one, dont like that you only get 4 ribs in a re-order? let your server know that you're going to be eating alot and just say keep putting them in, we'll still ask but we're pretty good about getting them in, if we're packed, then we going to be a bit slower getting back to you, its inevitable at any restaurant you go to, dont want all you can eat? come during lunch or get a half rack at the bar or as an appetizer IF no one else youre with is getting ribs, this also isnt a high class place, we're not going to individually serve the re-orders to you. also we DO NOT reuse ribs!!!!! that first of all is disgusting, and i dont know why people think we do, or how this rumor started, but it is COMPLETELY false. when we take the ribs into the back, they go in the garbage. end of story.
to our loyal customers, THANK YOU, you guys rock more then you know and we love to serve you, and for those who are doubting, give us another chance on a slower day like monday or tuesday, when you can really get the kind of attention and quiet experience youd enjoy.Very Good
I live right down the block and go there alot, yes the second serving of ribs is not the best, but let the waiter know and they come out just like the first
not very good
I've been to the Big Eds on Rt. 130 in South Brunswick a few times. The service is lousy. The waitresses just don't want to move. I didn't find the bbq very good either because it was fatty and sometimes even cold. In their defense I have never found a quaity bbq restaurant in NJ.
To answer all bad complaints...
It's no surprise that you have a complaint about the Big Ed's BBQ that's not owned by Big Ed himself. The only one he owns and operates is the one in Old Bridge or also known as Matawan. As far as fatty ribs, If you have a complaint then you tell the server to get a new rack. Simple as that. I work there and nothing is more annoying then when a table leaves a comment card that the ribs were fatty and and never said anything. Then that's your fault. If I'm not happy about something when I'm out then I send it back--I'm paying for it and I expect quality. The ribs aren't intentionally sent out fat--It's not like we are in the kitchen in a big huddle looking through the fattest bunch to send out to the table. It's pork ribs--it happens. That's the way it's sent to us. If you are unpleased we have NO PROBLEM sending out a new batch.
WHY DONY WE HAVE A NON ALL-U-CAN-EAT..because we are an ALL U CAN EAT restaraunt..that's like asking the chinese buffet place why they only have buffets. I can't fathom why people complain about $18.99 for all u can eat when you go somewhere else and it is $17.99 or $19.99 and NOT all u can eat.
Take out and garlic bread..It doesn't say anywhere on the menu that we give out garlic bread with take out--therefore we only put the one piece in when the cooks in the back have it ready to go. The bread is used as a dine in only compliment--not dine out compliment. Just like the salads...complimentary for dining in.
RE-ORDERS...a full rack of ribs are equivelant to about 4 racks of the portion u get on your plate. That's what a full rack of ribs looks like when it's being cooked in the back. We do NOT give out old ribs like someone said. That's just stupid and inaccurate. In anycase, the reason your re-orders are a lot smaller is because if you do not finish them you can not wrap them. If we did wrap them then everyone would just over order and we would be out of business. If you do not like your re order then send it back. People swear it's not the same rack--it is. Again we are not huddling around the grill seeing what rack is the crappiest that we can send out. Your just getting different parts of the huge rack thats in the back. Again, not happy--send it back.
And as far as one comment that a server was lazy because they just put the plate down instead of serving it to the table. You are kidding right?! The server is not being lazy--it's called pick up the plate and pass the ribs down.
Back to the fat on the ribs--the fat is what gives the ribs its natural flavor..you can just eat around it or just take it off..Get a new rack--whatever you need to do to make it an enjoyable experience.
We have been open over 16 years...we must be doing something right. We appreciate our loyal customers. We are always voted best bbq--thank you guys!!Top of of the Line for all you can eat...

This is without a doubt one of the best values you can get for your money. The ribs a fingerlickin' good, the service is attentive and friendly and the prorbably the only place left in town that serves a tall cocktail at a reasonable price. We travel over 40 minutes to eat at Ed's and visit at least once every two months. We highly recommend it!
Honky Tonk w great food!
I've been going there 15 years and never had a bad rack of ribs or any bad food. Down home type of place. If you get a chance to talk to Big Ed, he'll leave your head spinning! Go Rutgers!
