Lovers of Southern barbecue complain that there aren't enough authentic ''Q'' joints in the Garden State. Purists even argue that there really aren't any good pits north of the Mason Dixon line. Big Ed's BBQ is one of only a handful in New Jersey to get the nod from both the dedicated professionals and the amateur eaters of sloppy ribs. Big Ed's claim to fame is its all-you-can-eat ribs, all the time, which feature tender baby backs or spare ribs in a sweet and smoky special brewed sauce. The smell hangs in the air even in the parking lot, where you're introduced to something that resembles a theme-park interpretation of a Southern roadhouse: Large, smiling cartoons line the fences and barnlike exterior, and the inside is a continuation of the over-the-top look with wooden booths, red-and-white-checked vinyl tablecloths, TVs on different channels, and colorful roadside signs. It's the perfect spot for eating orgies and good cheer. Meat is the name of the game here, so the burgers are not too shabby and the hot links are very good. Sides of baked beans, coleslaw and corn on the cob round out your meal ... and your tummy.

  • BEWARE of ALL YOU CAN EAT

    Review rating : 1out of 5   MACIOSAIG - 01/09/2009

Its all you can eat BUT after you get your first plate good luck trying to get the waiter to bring you more. My first plate had 4 ribs on it and when i was done I patiently waited for my waitress to come back after 12 minutes I asked another waiter to either get me more or find my waitress. Well after 15 more mins. my waitress cam e to my table with 2 ribs on the new plate, before she left I asked her to bring me more and she said I'd have to finish the 2 I had before she could bring more. Well trying to explain that she was taking to long didnt work, and talking to the manager did nothing either. So its all you can eat but there will be a long pause between refills so you fill up fast and dont eat as much, very sneaky! And the BBQ quality is not authentic but sugary, syrupy BBQ sauce with no dry rub.

  • Great BBQ requires lots of napkins!

    Review rating : 5out of 5   pxl84u - 06/19/2008

Be prepared to bust a gut and go through lots of napkins. This is GREAT barbecue. Ed knows his meat and ribs! And BBQ sauce!! What can I say - I'm a huge BBQ enthusiast; there's isn't anything I haven't tried to grill at home. So when I can't get to Big Ed's restaurant, I'm grilling my own chicken, ribs and meat with The Original Big Ed's BBQ Sauce. Get it at the market! If you can't handle the grill, get to this restaurant for sure!! You'll fall in love!

Waited tables for over 20 years, when you have the kind of business that Big Eds has, someone is going to have to wait! My son took us for dinner a few months ago. The food was great! I LOVED the ribs, best I have had in years! Servers were harried but attentive. Great place to eat, cannot wait to go back!

Being a born & bred Jersey guy who's been dispalced to New Mexico for last 30 years, Big Ed's is a must do event when I make my once a year pilgrimage/road trip back to the Garden State.....Just a great place to sit, drink a few beers to wash down some really great smoked east coast "Q".....
