The no-frills sign on the diminutive River St. building says it all in just three words: "White Manna Hamburgers." The Hackensack eatery has become part of North Jersey folklore thanks to its 70-year legacy of slopping the greasiest, tastiest burgers onto the plates of the patrons who sit in its cramped quarters. The shoebox-sized burger joint has just enough room for its half-moon countertop, short stools and the perpetual line of salivating customers. As for the burgers themselves, the secret lies in their simplicity and the freshness of the meat. Cooked on a grill right in front of you, the burgers start out as clumps of ground beef. With a swift whack of the spatula and some sauteed onions, your meal starts to take shape. In true White Manna fashion, the roll top is in place after the first flip and within minutes, the legendary burger is in front of you with a side of equally delicious fries. Just don't take too long to savor it; you might get some "urging" from the guy behind you waiting for a seat.

These burgers cant be beat! Maybe matched by a different burger but certainly cant be beat. I read about the terrible service...yeah...but thats not why people go there. ITS THE FANTASTIC BURGERS MADE OF MANNA!!!

If you are expecting "excellent service" (whatever that is)..then don't come in, in fact, stay out, please! It will give us all a bit of extra room in there.
The place is charming. So what if its small and smelly?.. thats part of the experience. The slider burgers there are THE BEST , hands down. Don't even try to compare them to those nasty white castle sliders that , more often than not, leave you on the toilet begging. Granted, it may be hard to put your order in, but thats the only way they have to filter the real customers from the people that need to go back to the white linen burger shops with their aoili sauce and spring water.

MY GOD what a lousy place!
The service is terrible as suggested, and the burgers are slimy with bad onions! The lady cooking needs an orthodontist to correct her problem. Not to mention the charm bracelet that she wears tangles in the burgers! YUCK!! and the after taste is still in my throat! ooooooooff

  • White Manna

    Review rating : 5out of 5   TJake53 - 06/17/2008

I grew up in Queens and when my father started his Spice Mixing business in Hackensack back in 1969, I learned about the great burgers at the White Manna from the truck drivers delivering our raw materials. Since then my wife & daughter make monthly trips from Rockland County for 3-4 double cheeseburgers. Over the years we have introduced at least 50 or more people to the amazing taste treats consistently served at the Manna. Rule #1: If you are within a 10 mile radius of Hackensack, my car automatically heads towards the Manna. Rule#2: Take off your leather jackets before entering the place because you will smell like onions while sitting around the grill.
