When you turn the corner in tasteful, pristine downtown Denville and catch your first glimpse of the colorful and fantastic faade of Hunan Taste, you'll be shocked. But although this kitschy building looks like Disney's idea of Chinatown, the elegant dining rooms and the crowd-pleasing menu should relieve your fears. That pleasant haze should stay with you through your dumplings with hot oil, Kung Pao chicken with peanuts, and beef with snow peas. There's nothing shocking about Hunan Taste's Americanized menu, with Grand Marnier chicken or shrimp in a boozy, sweet sauce and juicy Peking duck served with crisp scallions, crepes, and plum sauce. The spacious dark-wood interior, rows of glowing exotic fish tanks, and blue-and-white china create an atmosphere right for large groups, families with children, couples and business associates. Some complain about the unimaginative menu or the uneven service, but everything else at this Chinese comfort food palace is designed to sooth while you dine inside its walls.

I love the Grand Marnier Chicken/Shrimp. You won't find anything like it anywhere else. Also, their filet minon is excellent.

I've been dining here for about 7 years now regularly, with family/friends. It's hard to eat at another Chinese restaurant. If I do, the other restaurants always fall short of Hunan's quality. Their food is delicious - with big portions as well. None of that measly baby shrimp in their shrimp and lobster or grand marnier shrimp (one of my fave dishes). Management is great as well, remembering faces and making their rounds around the dining room making sure everyone is enjoying their dining experience. Their fish tank bar is awesome, and awesome mixed drinks ;). If you plan on a large party, make reservations. This place is always packed on weekends.
One of the best
The food here is amazing. You'll feel as if you're tasting even the most mundane dishes like General Tso's chicken for the first time. The MaBo Tofu is also the best I've ever had. You can tell if you eat the food that they respect the customer (which is rare at Chinese restaurants): Ingredients are all top-notch, they don't cut corners by putting in cheap stuff thinking the customer won't notice, and it's always prepared properly. Definitely one of the best Chinese restaurants I've ever eaten at, and I've eaten at a lot.
The Best in America
Hunan is where I entertain friends, have small parites of 4 to 8 friends, go with my husband on special occasions or whenever we are in Denville. Its my favorite place, my husbands favorite, and my best friend and her husbands favorite.
I am appauled to see anyone could write something back about HUNAN TASTE. I have never gone wrong with sit down lunches and dinners, but have heard the "take out" is not as good as the inside dinning. ? maybe a different cook who knows. All i can say is grab a friend, sit down, relax and enjoy your wonderful hunan ! I will be going again soon !Best Chinese In Nj
Great ambiance (the aquarium's are a hit with kids). If you like spice, the hot & sour soup and mei fun are excellent. Very good service and a couple of maitre d's with character. This is far and away the best Chinese in NJ.
Disappointing
I liked the atmosphere, and the prices were more reasonable then I expected, but the service was blasé and the food didn't exactly thrill me. My companion had chicken and broccoli which was good, but I've had better at some take out places I frequent. I ordered the grand marnier chicken and never having had it before I didn't quite know what to expect, but what I didn't expect was for it not to have a hint of grand marnier flavor at all. Maybe that's the way it's supposed to be but the white sticky sweet sauce was just that-sticky sweet. So much so I couldn't eat it, and took it home for others to sample. Out of the four people that sampled the leftovers, none thought it was good. The staff didn't bother to ask why I hadn't eaten my meal. So much for attentiveness. With so many other restaurants to sample, I'm not likely to give this one the second chance it may deserve.
Mmmmm
The food is amazing, the service is excellent, and the atmosphere is fun.
It's a little pricey, but well worth it.
