Smack at the hub of downtown Clifton's tangle of parkways, the Hot Grill's the place you thought had long since disappeared. "New" Jersey seemingly doesn't have time for either 1960s prices or meals, but here they somehow survive thanks to a ravenous and loyal clientele. Join the always-lengthy queue and gobble a "Texas" wiener (invented in Jersey, though nobody can agree where) dressed "all the way" with onions, chili and mustard; a plate of zingy, gravy-sopping fries; a cup of chili with beans; or two eggs with bacon, toast and potatoes. You couldn't spend more than five bucks on an entree if you tried -- even on a platter of roast beef with gravy and fries. Want to take home some of the spicy house chili sauce? No problem. Lots of customers do that; they've even designed a special bucket here for easy carrying home. How entrenched is this place? Tricky Dick Nixon was supposedly a client of the place. Er, pre-Watergate, that is.

  • THE BEST!

I grew up in Garfield, but my Dad's family was from Clifton. As a kid it was the only place to go for Texas wieners. For over 20 years I have lived about 20 miles west, but every now and again I find myself in the Clifton area and ALWAYS make sure I stop by. My usual order is 1 "all the way" for here, because the aroma would makes me crazy for the drive back home, and 15 to go. Then I call my husband, (who eat at least 4) and two adult children and their spouses, Mom is on her way with dinner. It does not get any better than Hot Grill! Where else can I feed a family of 6 for around $33.

im 30 yrs old and remmeber goin to hotgrill atleast every other week as a kid. The food is so good that even now that i live in south jersey over a good hr drive away i try to make a trip atleast every other month just to have some and take home a few buckets of chilli. the best is bringing a friend from the shore to watch them in work. I swear you need to go to school just to understand what there saying its there own language. the atmosphere and food are worth the trip

  • decent place.

    Review rating : 3out of 5   qqqxz - 05/17/2007

the only reason why i come here as much is the late hours and decent prices.. if jimmy jims (can't believe no one mentioned jimmy jims) in garfield was open past 8 i'd go there a lot more often... rutts hutt is too far for me and closes early also, although i prefer their dogs (even though they don't make chili dogs anymore).. their mustard and relish are to die for.

so if you like a place open late that is reasonably cheap goto hot grill.. however, if you have a bit of extra cash and it's an early afternoon, i highly suggest jimmy jims, or rutts hutt.
