Cape Fear Museum explores a wide range of North Carolina's historical topics, from the history and legacy of the Civil War to the ecological changes that are constantly shifting the land and people of this state. Of note is the diorama depicting the Wilmington waterfront circa 1863, which includes a re-enactment of the battle of Fort Fisher. The Discovery Gallery, funded by Wilmington native Michael Jordan, details three local ecosystems that represent the area's different wildlife habitats. There is even a life-size reproduction of a giant sloth, the remains of which were discovered in the process of constructing a dam nearby in 1991. The size of this behemoth herbivore is intimidating to the uninitiated -- it's more than 14 feet tall.
