Asian Bistro Fare in Downtown Raleigh
Fine dining meets Chinese and Vietnamese home cooking at The Duck & Dumpling in downtown Raleigh, where Chef David Mao creates Asian bistro fare in this urban contemporary restaurant. Raised by Chinese parents in Vietnam, which was then a French colony, Chef David blends the three culinary cultures of his heritage as the manager and executive chef at The Duck & Dumpling. From what used to be a furniture store in the 1930s, the restaurant's interior lighting casts a red glow onto historic Moore Square, welcoming guests inside to enjoy a varied pan-Asian menu. Chef David's flavorful specialties include handmade half-fried dumplings, edamame hummus, filet mignon chinois and poached sea scallops. The sophisticated menu is priced for everyday dining, whether for lunch or dinner, in the restaurant or in the mirrored mahogany bar area.Visit Citysearch.com

Upscale Asian Bistro brings finesse to downtown Raleigh.

In Short
This downtown addition is cosmopolitan in style and decor, with beautiful mahogany wood paneling enhanced by warm red lighting. Classic jazz plays in the background, tables are well spaced with occasional glass partitioning. The light, pan-Asian menu consists of classic Vietnamese dishes of grilled lemongrass pork or chicken. Steak lovers will enjoy the braised New York strip with garlic sauce, cut into bite-sized morsels and tasting as tender as caramel.

What To Drink
The inviting bar area does not interfere with the dining room and boasts an extensive, affordable wine list that far outweighs the trendy beer selection.

Know Before You Go
The restaurant's flexible cooking arrangement allows for lemongrass dishes to be prepared without meats.

  • Good Food, Horrible Service

I went there with a party of 14 people. The food was great! Everybody enjoyed the atmosphere but the service... It was horrible! Servers were rude and not sure of who got which entree! And then they told us they could not split the check, and if they did it had to be evenly. I wish they had told me that when I made my reservation! That way I would've told my friends we all needed to bring cash, instead of credit cards. We left the restaurant very disappointe. And the chef never came to our table! Pathetic!

Excellent! A dining smorgasbord for even a vegetarian. When the owner/chef comes to your table to check on your enjoyment of his creations...well, it is a class act! Food was served with flair and our server was also first class. Ask for Anna...you'll get outstanding service, as is the food.

Lunch at the Duck & Sumpling is a real treat. The atmosphere is chic and trendy and the menu is very creative. I had the Chicken and Cashew as an entree, with an assortment of tasty appetizers beforehand. The sauces were just right and the portions were perfect. My entree came with carefully prepared rice and a small eggroll with dipping sauce. Service was fast and efficient. Don't miss the D & D for lunch!
