North Carolina is barbecue country, and locals have a million ways to serve it up. At R.O.'s, the style is tender sliced pork on a fried-on-one-side bun, topped with some of the most-touted slaw in the state. Heap the famed slaw on a barbecue sandwich and you'll taste mayo, tomatoes and the ''secret spices'' that have made it an R.O.'s staple for decades. Not much at R.O.'s has changed since the restaurant opened in the '40s: The barbecue recipe and juicy coleslaw remain the same; curbside service is still an R.O's fixture; and smiling barbecue fans still stuff the booths daily, continuing a Gastonia tradition more than a half-century in the making. Now owned by the third generation of the same family, R.O.'s knows barbecue. For the complete experience, wait outside and let the carhops come to you.

  • Hillbillys is thee best! in Gastonia

    Review rating : 1out of 5   Tamishams - 08/22/2008

I am a lover of good bbq and my husband and I swooned over Hillbilly's. I have smeeled that aroma going down I-85 many times and now we eat there every week. Ro's bbq not that great. I don't like pork as it has a twangy taste and when you pour a vinegar sauce, worse yet. I highly reccommmend you try Hillbilly's BBQ, your only complaint is you didn't get enough to really pig out. Service was extremely fast also I might add.

  • Not BBQ!!!!

You can not SMELL anything when you drive by RO's, when you buy a sliced BBQ sandwich, you can't taste anything but the dry meat, with ketchup, mayonaise sauce they call SLAW!, if you want real BBQ, that you can SMELL and TASTE, try Carolina Country or Hillbillies BBQ...Don't waste your time or money at RO's

  • Not Impressed

    Review rating : 1out of 5   LustfulAlice - 06/12/2008

I've lived in this neighborhood for five (5) years now due to poverty forced upon me by a disability, and I've eaten at a variety of high-end and not- high-end places throughout my almost 59 years of life having eaten at RO's at least a couple of times, and I'm simply not impressed. I've found the meat too overcooked causing it to be tasteless and dry without the moisture of sauce, and pink cole slaw is just weird to look at to it. Again, but as much as others around here rave about the place, I pass it by without thinking twice.

  • Through the years best BBQ.

    Review rating : 5out of 5   RuffRMR - 06/11/2008

Although we don't live in the area anymore my wife of 38 years and I still enjoy a sliced BBQ sandwich and a hamburger with slaw each time we go home for a visit with family and friends. It's fun to go there and reminisce about our teenage years while parked in our favorite parking spot. I can't imagine Gastonia without RO's. It just wouldn't be the same.

  • Very Local BBQ

    Review rating : 5out of 5   Wellsstate - 06/05/2008

First of all, those who wrote poor reviews can't possibly be from the area. No, the neighborhood isn't the greatest, but it certainly doesn't affect the great taste of the BBQ. It is a landmark in Gastonia and people have been flocking there for decades. It's not your traditional BBQ, as it is lean pork that is either chopped or sliced, topped with their unique homemade slaw. It can be messy, but it is so good. If you are ever passing through Gastonia, it is worth the stop. I don't live there anymore, but I always make it a priority to go there when I am in town. Just don't go in there expecting your typical BBQ sandwich!

  • Ole True Gaston County Secret. RO'S

    Review rating : 5out of 5   bigman2x4x8 - 05/30/2008

This is BBQ of a time when people wanted home cooked BBQ. I started going when I was a teen ager driving between Shonies and RO,s chasing girls. The neighborhood has gone down but the food is the same as it was back then. The Slaw is now sold thru out the area in grocery stores and they have a couple moble units that sells food at a select locations. If you want atmoshere go back north but if you want a tradtional BBQ sandwich then come try a Gaston County favorite.

WE USED TO GATHER AT RO'S WHEN I WAS A TEEN IN THE 60'S. I HAVE LIVED IN ATLANTA GA FOR THE LAST 18 YEARS, BUT WE STILL GO BACK TO GASTONIA JUST FOR RO'S BBQ ONCE A YEAR.
