A bar and live music venue in funky Elizabeth, the Visulite was once an old-fashioned movie house. The retro marquee lives on, now listing an eclectic slate of performers handpicked by Visulite impresario Bernie Brown. A city favorite, the Visulite offers a rockin' sound system, gonzo live shows, clean bathrooms (!) and a famously cool bunch of bartenders. A haven for music that's outside the mainstream, the Visulite consistently provides a fun night out for fans of music that isn't soulless plastic sounds played by soulless plastic people.

Entertainment ranges from jam bands to punk to funk to hip-hop to spoken word to you name it (check the Web site for details about current shows). Performers are both indie and national, with a pinch of local acts. A smallish, intimate stage hosts the shows; music lovers can chill on musty old sofas or have a pint at the bar. The Visulite is a members-only club, but memberships come cheap at $2.
