If you're in the mood for a savory meal that may require several napkins to get through, head on over to Sonny's Real Pit Bar-B-Q for some traditional 'cue that should have you licking your fingers long after the last morsel is chewed. Sonny's specializes in ribs, chicken and pork slow-cooked over a real hardwood smoker and smothered with sweet barbecue sauce. Before digging into your carnivore's delight, you might want to begin with a visit to the salad bar. Vegetarian buddies can make do with the salad and a choice of sides, including baked russet and sweet potatoes, creamy coleslaw, fried okra, onion rings and corn nuggets.

Other menu items include lean smoked turkey, breaded catfish, Southern-style franks and beans, and charbroiled steak. The Brunswick stew is an classic Southern delight, chockfull of meat, beans and flavorful spices. If you're still hungry for dessert, try the cherry pie. Beer is available in bottles and on tap. The joint tends to get extra crowded around lunchtime, when the business crowd is in search of chow that will leave them sated without hitting their wallets too hard. Good thing takeout is available.

  • BBQ ~ NOT

    Review rating : 1out of 5   LDodson313 - 07/25/2008

I have tried Sonny's a number of times due to peer pressure and can not understand why anyone with a single taste bud would eat their food. The ribs are tough and have a marked taste of plastic, the chicken is either under cooked or like leather, and the pork contains too much fat to be tasty. On rare occasions one can find a "fresh" salad bar but, most often it is the best item in the place.

If you are seeking good BBQ do not stop at any Sonny's location!

I am from the south and know good barbeque. Sonny's is delicious. Now I live in Michigan and there is not one single good barbeque restaurant up here. Come on Sonny...Show the north what you have!!! You could mop up the entire state of Michigan. I live in the lower part eastern side outside of Detroit. Open your first location here,ok??!! Many people are looking for good barbeque up here.

I have been going to Sonny's in Florida since I was a child. I am so glad we have them here now. This is the BEST BBQ around. Beats the heck out of the vinegar stuff some people call BBQ.

  • GROSS

I can't even give it one star. It is disgusting. I am by no means a bbq snob...but seriously. It is totally false advertising to declare themselves a homestyle type of place. You can taste the plastic wrap that the food was packaged in. NASTY NASTY NASTY

  • Salad bar

Great salad bar, this is not BBQ, for a chain rest. this is not real BBQ. The best chain rest. BBQ go to "COOK OUT".

  • Good place to take a yankee who you don;t like.

    Review rating : 1out of 5   bigman2x4x8 - 05/30/2008

Food is good enough to feed yankees, but not up to southern standards. The best part of the meal is the bread and the salad bar. The tea is OK but you have to wait for it most of the times. There cooks either burn the meat or under cook it. If you must go here get the Pulled as its is at least cook thru and thru. I take Yankees who want to move down here, to this place as a way to deter them. Sonny;s and Tums go together.

  • Bad Start to BBQ Weekend

    Review rating : 1out of 5   marketingmusic76 - 11/07/2006

We ended up doing take-out from Sonny's late on a Friday night after getting into Charlotte for a weekend wedding. It was extremely dissapointing, even for a chain place. Everything was dry and flavorless. Some of their sauces are OK, but they would be much better on meat from other places!
