A stone's throw from Wal-Mart is hardly where you'd expect to find some of the best Italian food in town. But tucked away in the same East Charlotte strip mall that humbly holds a Sally's Beauty Supply is a cozy eatery that serves Italian food and pizza that have won any number of Charlotte media's 'Best Of' awards. In Italy, Portofino is an exclusive seaside resort, but here in the Queen City, it's a snug bistro low on ambience (though not without the charm of simplicity) and filled with the aroma of baking New York-style pizza that's won the hearts of many Big Apple transplants. Clientele are neighborhood types, and the vibe is refined but casual.

There's no nouveau cuisine here, just linguine in clam sauce, eggplant parmigiana and spaghetti and meatballs at prices that will make you think twice about equating fine dining with an emptied wallet. There's no delivery from Portofino's, but something this good is worth the drive.

  • Cheesesteak!!!

The best cheesesteak I have found in Charlotte is at Protofino's. I drive out to the restaurant and bring them back to share with neighbors. Add one to your order and you will be a fan.

SHE BROUGHT THE SALADS BEFORE THE APPETIZERS>>SHE BROUGHT MY SIDE DISH FOR MY ENTREE WITH THE SALAD>>>SHE BROUGHT ME A GLASS OF HOUSE CABERNET THAT SMELLED SO MOLDY YOU COULD HAVE MADE PENICILLEN WITH IT>>THEN AT the end of the dinner she said..do you want a box for the spinach..I said NO ITS ICE COLD>>YOU BROUGHT IT WITH MY SALAD!! WHO TRAINED THESE SERVERS>>I WAS TRAINED BY MARRIOTT>>>NEVER EVER DO YOU BRING THE SALAD BEFORE THE APPTIZERS>>>EVER>>NOT GOOD

  • Best Italian Food ANYWHERE

    Review rating : 5out of 5   charlottecard - 04/06/2007

Having recently moved to Charlotte from New York, I tried for weeks to find good, authetic, Italian food...anywhere. I tried the $17.00 "New York" Pizza that tasted like Ragu on a pita. i wasn't happy.

Then, a friend told me about Portofino's. I went there for my girlfiend's birthday. When we pulled up, i have to admit, was nervous. It looked just like every pizza parlor on Long Island. Non-descript, glass counter with several different ypes of pies, etc. But, when we were seated in the restaurant, the atmosphere took over. Quiet, well-lit, and nicely decorated. Our waiter (sorry, I forget his name) was pleasant,. made great suggestions, and served our food timely, and didn't overlap the courses as if the ywere in a hurry to get us out. My favorite, Chicken Parmesagn, was almost bigger than the plate. And delicious??/ It melted in my mouth. Now, i am not a spaghettti eater, but the way they make theirs, I couldn't get enough. And whee can 2 people go and have such a great, filling, dinner, WITH appetizers, for less than $40.00?

    Try it...you'll like it.

A retorte to this poster, pizza is prepared and then tossed in an oven that is 550 degrees, there is no known disease that can survive that.

  • LOVE THE FOOD THERE

Have been going to Portofino's since it opened on Eastway - the one on Park Rd. is great too ! Carmella and Josh always make you feel welcome. Kick a-- Manicotti and GREAT pizza. Run by real Italians(not Greeks) that really know how to make great food. Would not go to any other place for authentic Italian. Great job to all the staff. We've even had them cater lunch at my job the food is sooo good. Love the marinara sauce and the salad dressing.

I went to Portofino's on day for some pizza. They took my order and started to make the pizza with no gloves. While still making the pizza the worker answered the phone and handled money with no gloves on, and then continued to make my pizza without even washing his hands. I think that is very unsanitery and they should not be running a business doing this. They dont even deserve a star because they are lower then poor on the scale.
