Charlotte's Restaurant voted #1 Hamburger in the nation!
Welcome to The Penguin Drive-In! While our menu still features the basic burgers, dogs, and fries, also offers a house-made Brunswick stew, a Ribeye sandwich and soy dogs and burgers for the vegetarian crowd. On any particular day, or night, you'll find what s a "nice mix" of people enjoying a meal or a cold one. Businessmen lean on the bar, mixed in with a few of the "old-timers." Punks with purple hair occupy a booth. A family of yuppies complete with baby stroller sits in the corner. The jukebox plays every kind of music - from doo-wop to country to new age to punk. The Penguin makes everyone feel welcome. That's part of the tradition. Stop by now and come early, because it?s first come-first-serve. Ask for on of our favorites like the "Big Block", Fried Dill Pickles, Sweet Potato Fries, Brunswick Stew, and a cold one to wash it down.Visit Citysearch.com

  • Staff is rude and racist.

I do enjoy the food at this establishment but, staff is rude and as an afro american who lives in the Chantilly neighborhood and love the fact that I could walk to the restaurant. I will never go back. I sense that staff and racist to me and others of color. I thought maybe it was just my subjective perspective, but others have had similar experiences...I think is just sad.

I had the Dixie Chicken and actually prefer it over the burger. The fried pickles are to die for and the atmosphere is one big party. The owners treat everyone like family, service is good and quick and personable. We will be regulars!!!

My son had recently moved to Charlotte area and on a visit back home we were listing to the food channel as we prepared for a party. The show was talking about old diners and the Penguin was featured needless to say on my next visit toCharlotte we found this icon, the food is great ,the atmosphere is awesome but you got to get there early or you could wait for a long time for a table. Now it's visited on every trip We love the fried pickles and the home made pimento cheese is the best.

  • After 4 attempts......

    Review rating : 5out of 5   Ericksonsinsa - 06/25/2008

From the day we moved here locals asked "Been to Penguin yet?" After 4 attempts to get in, we finally decided to wait - no matter how long it took - to be seated. The wait in the 90+degree heat was WORTH IT. I ordered the small block burger, southern style. Southern style? I wasn't sure that even sounded right- coleslaw on a burger? but I figure - there is a reason I just overheard 4 people around me order there burgers that way. They brought it. I devoured it. I proudly announced to all that would listen that I have found the one thing my life lacked up until that moment. Southern Style Penguin burgers. Sound like an overstatement? It's not.
