Throw low-carb caution to the wind and indulge in New York-style pizza in Charlotte's historic Elizabeth neighborhood. This oregano-scented neighborhood joint, styled after the homey feel of a Big Apple pizzeria, still gives off a slightly funky Uptown feel. Warm colors and dark wood accent the exposed cinderblock interiors of this eatery, where you can grab a seat at a table, booth, the bar or patio. Hawthorne's menu features pizzeria favorites like strombolis, wings, calzones and salads. The main attraction is -- of course -- the pizza. The gourmet pizzas -- baked in a stone oven -- come complete with the toppings of your choice and the trademark thin, NY-style crust. Pie-making operations are overseen by 'Al the Pizza Guy,' a transplanted New Yorker imported to provide pizza expertise. Prices here are wallet-friendly, topping out at less than $20 for a large pie big enough to serve a table of hungry diners.

This was our first time eating at Hawthornes! I have to say everything was fantastic! The waitress was very nice. The service was great! We ordered side salads and a pepperoni New York pizza. The salad wasnt anything fancy, (green lettuce, purple onion. tomatoe. cucumber) but it was the freshest salad that I have had in a long time. They make their own ranch...delicious! Then they bring out this huge cheesy pizza. Oh my gosh, it was so good. I just ate there today and cant wait to go back. I would love to try other things on the menu but I dont know if I can tear myself away from the pizza! The prices are reasonable. I think our pizza was $11 for cheese (add $2/ topping)(salad $3.50). Lots to choose from on menue (wings, calamari, cheesesticks, calzones, pannini, desserts, and much more...) The restraunt is very clean, laid back. The bathrooms were very clean also! They have a place that you can stand and watch the cook throwing the dough into the air etc... I cant wait to go back!

The first time I went to Hawthorns I fell in love with their buffalo chicken stromboli... delicious!! Ive tried other dishes and havent been quite as impressed... had the buffalo chicken pizza - it was 'ok'. Last time I had their buffalo chicken salad and it was AWFUL... the chicken was undercooked and there were only 6 SMALL pieces.. for $9. The waiter never came back to the table so I ate the lettuce and didnt touch the rest (I was on a timeframe). Ive had their tom/basil/mozz salad and that was good.. my friend had a pasta dish that was tasty. I will go back and stick to what Ive already tried but no more experimenting from the menu!

Went with the children- ordered two large pizzas. The service was fine until we got the food, then our server disppeared. We needed a hacksaw to cut through the crust of the pizza. Finally found the server and asked for a steak knife. My husband had to cut it even with the kitchen knife they brought. Will never go back.

  • Disgusting

    Review rating : 1out of 5   cwhsprs2005 - 02/10/2007

My coworkers and I ordered dinner while at work. The salad I ordered was disgusting, the salad dressing was premixed in with the greens and there were only four chicken bites. Because, you see it was suppose to be a Buffalo style chicken salad. I'm from NY so I know really good food, it was one of the worst salads I've ever had. The rest of my coworkers weren't impressed with their orders either. I've had food from the .99 cent menu that tasted better, when you spend 8.50 for a meal you at least expect at minimum, something that is marginally tasty. Needless to say ,our people aren't going to waste any more money with this place.

I was a huge fan of Fuels and still am. But after a late night trip to the hospital happened upon Hawthornes and gave it a try. Was the best pizza I have had in years.Personal note: Try the house white with pesto +sundried tomatoes,I am a big meat eater so I added Bacon.Great pizza, service and atmosphere.Have been back several times & highly reccomend.
