North Carolina's famous Eastern-style barbecue (no tomato or sugar, plenty of vinegar and cayenne) has kept patrons coming to Bill Spoon's Barbecue since it opened in 1963. This Charlotte institution cooks the whole pig, and as their sign says, "It makes all the difference." Though the decor is sparse, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming at this family-owned venue.

You'll often find the owner himself, Bill Spoon, working the counter, and he'll be glad to offer you a sample. Try the signature hot sauce -- a zesty, vinegar-based concoction -- on your sandwich, which comes topped with a mustard and mayonnaise-based coleslaw. Add hushpuppies or barbecued potatoes and wash it all down with traditional Southern sweet tea. There's also banana pudding and apple pie for dessert.     fast, friendly service, feels like i'm sitting at the dining room table. this was my first visit, and i will now consistently drive past mac's on south to go to bill spoon's. lean, tasty 'cue expertly seasoned and moist and delicious. the sauce is good, too. bbq king is almost as good, and i used to love hog heaven before it closed down. being that i just found this place after being born and raised in charlotte, i was very pleasantly surprised

    Bill Spoon's is the best barbecue in Charlotte....hands down. I make a 20 minute drive once a week to satisfy my craving. I must also mention that they offer the best service in town. You are always greeted with a smile and you know your business is truly appreciated.

    No it is not Texas BBQ; Texas is good for beef but takes seconds to NC or Pork. Nor is it Memphis style; add to that Kansas City and a whole host of other locations that have great BBQ. Each location that cooks pork has distinct styles and flavors.

    Spoon’s cooks the whole pig long and serves it traditional Eastern NC style; smoked and un-sauced. The sauce they provide is spicy vinegar based sauce. The pork is not sauced while it is cooked, adding flavors that hide the true flavor of the pork like some other styles will do.

    Spoon’s rates up there with the better establishments in Eastern North Carolina from Wilson, Rocky Mount, Goldsboro and many other points to the east of Charlotte. Without question it is the best BBQ in Charlotte and I think I know que. I eat at many different BBQ establishments a year around the country, eating BBQ several times a week.

    The best BBQ ever fresh with the mustard slaw is sooooo good!
    They are OPEN ON SATURDAYS NOW!!!!!! Stop in you will love it.

    Bill Spoon's serves the only barbecue I've ever had that's truly addicting. I've shared it with friends and family on the west coast and now I have to ship it regularly. This is Charlotte's "real deal" Eastern NC style with no sugar or tomato sauce, just the smoked cue seasoned with vinegar, red pepper and the passion for excellence that permeates every lean morsel. Top if off with crispy hush puppies, Charlotte's best sweet tea, and Spoon's banana pudding, and you'll be in hog heaven. Come hungry but don't come late; Spoon's does such a good business during the day it's not open for dinner.
