If you crave a cooked-to-order burger that will literally drip down your chin as you take the first couple bites, O'Connell's Pub in the city offers the real thing. As Gaslight Square spiraled into decline, O'Connell's changed locations in 1972 and took root near the Missouri Botanical Garden. The owner brought as many of the original fixtures with him as he could, including the woodwork, beveled-glass windows and the 1904 World's Fair chandeliers. He moved it all into another historic building -- a pub built in 1905 by Anheuser Busch himself at the corner of Kingshighway Boulevard and Shaw Avenue. The tin roof, rustic wood floors and booths, faded, old-time sports illustrations and chalkboard menu that hang on the walls all add to the traditional pub feeling. The menu, while limited and focused on the renowned burgers, includes other favorites like roast beef, jumbo shrimp, Coney Island dogs, and fish and chips on Fridays. Desserts are limited to cheesecakes and pies. It's all served on Chinete, and the whipped cream with your dessert will cost you 25-cents extra, but the crowds representing all ages and classes can't seem to get enough.

Great Beef
O'Connells has been a landmark since it moved from Gaslight Square to its present location....In my humble opinion, it reminded me of Cheers, in that after a couple of visits you felt comfortable with the staff and patrons and 'everybody knows your name'....The burgers are overrated, but OC's has the very best roast beef sandwich in town....and after moving to Florida 4 years ago, I crave that roast beef sandwich and a Guiness......
Add CommentTHE VERY BEST

Before I moved out to LA., if someone moved to STL I always took them to OC's for a burger and fries. Its the cut of the meat kids. The Best burgers in STL. Cept for mine!!
enjoy, but you'll need a thick skin
food's great! service? not so much. i've never before had a waitress actually berate me for asking about an item she was supposed to bring 15 minutes ago. another time the manager told us we brought in too many people at once. i guess we should have eaten in shifts.

Hands down the best burger
I've lived in St Louis since 1983. I have found the O'Connell's burger hands down the BEST I've eaten in St Louis. Great quality of meat and cooked to your liking. My opinion is their burger surpasses Red Robin, Max & Erma's, Blueberry Hill, & Krieger's to name a few.
Another St. Louis Joke

Without a doubt there are many burger joints in St. Louis, however O'Connell's is far from the best. We have the Train Wreck locations, We have two places in Kirkwood much better, and by-the-way service at O'Connell's is not very good. Just like Ted Drews we have better and people should get out and explore.
Never been there.
I can't comment on O'Connell's Pub as I've never been there and to be honest, based on the reviews I don't know that I ever will. I'm writing, though, because the editors have apparently overlooked Dooley's, a Downtown pub that to those of us that work downtown and eat there often, is the best burger in St. Louis. Dooley's serves a big, juicy grilled burger bursting with flavor and their fries are outstanding as well. Give them a try and I hope next year the editors see fit to add them to their list.
SOS
Another overated St Louis icon. The burgers taste like hocky pucks and the service is indifferent at best. No one but a parocial small town St. Louisian would give this place a second glance. If you go to restaurants for the furniture you will love it! If you go for the food take a pass.
Yuck
i don't get all the hoopla. Not something I would go back to. Much better hamburgers from our own grill!
