If you crave a cooked-to-order burger that will literally drip down your chin as you take the first couple bites, O'Connell's Pub in the city offers the real thing. As Gaslight Square spiraled into decline, O'Connell's changed locations in 1972 and took root near the Missouri Botanical Garden. The owner brought as many of the original fixtures with him as he could, including the woodwork, beveled-glass windows and the 1904 World's Fair chandeliers. He moved it all into another historic building -- a pub built in 1905 by Anheuser Busch himself at the corner of Kingshighway Boulevard and Shaw Avenue. The tin roof, rustic wood floors and booths, faded, old-time sports illustrations and chalkboard menu that hang on the walls all add to the traditional pub feeling. The menu, while limited and focused on the renowned burgers, includes other favorites like roast beef, jumbo shrimp, Coney Island dogs, and fish and chips on Fridays. Desserts are limited to cheesecakes and pies. It's all served on Chinete, and the whipped cream with your dessert will cost you 25-cents extra, but the crowds representing all ages and classes can't seem to get enough.

Comfortable and relaxing

I love O'Connell's. A group of us who walk on Saturday morning have been going there for lunch afterwards for many years. The food is great - simple and delicious. They serve the best soups by far in St. Louis. The staff is friendly. The place looks great - warm light, wood paneling, turn of the century chandeliers in the bar. A great place to relax and enjoy a good meal.

If you are going here for after 1am bar closings, great. If need lunch in a hour... for get about it. This place has the worst service in town, not to mention filthy. Food is okay but not what it use to be. I hope this servey helps

OConnells was a good burger 20 years ago but not anymore. I used to have O'Connels at the top of my list for burgers but the quality of meat doesn't compare to some of the other burger emporiums in St. Louis. It's day has come and gone.
Please Boycott this place!
Just for the disabled and handicapped, they will not serve me, I'm a real human, yes disabled, but never has anyone made me feel so bad about my disablety, I look normal, they will not let you stand at the bar and eat, they all looked at me as if I was crazy to even think about asking to order a burger, I asked for a glass of water, they said no! I said please, I have to take some medicine, and he did give me a real glass with water before I was asked to leave, while all of them looked at me, as if I was different, I'm not, just disabled, I no longer leave my home except to go to the hospital, I feel like everyone looks at me the sameway they did, PLease don't go there, call them and tell them what you think, they turned me into a hermet, if I do end up owning the place, I promise everyone a free dinner and drink during my first week under my ownership.
Thanks Folks,
Joel
Burgers & Roast Beef
If you visit St. Louis and miss O'Connell's Pub, you've missed St. Louis. Try getting in on St. Patrick's Day--best to sleep overnight in the parking lot... Great burgers but the Roast Beef is phenomenal.
