For St. Louisans, Mike Shannon's name is immediately recognizable. After all, this is America's ultimate baseball city. Shannon was not only a mainstay of the outstanding Cardinals squads of the 1960s, he has since gone on to perhaps even greater local renown as one of the broadcast voices of the beloved team, which plays its home games at Busch Stadium, a line drive away from the front door of this baseball-themed restaurant, which moved down the street in early 2006.

Add it all up, and Shannon's would doubtless prosper even if it didn't take its food seriously. But it does, as the extensive and relatively ambitious menu -- heavy with steak, lobster and other high-end dishes -- might suggest. From the food to the pristine stemware and immaculate linens, Mike Shannon's steakhouse epitomizes St. Louis fine dining. The menu is dedicated to prime dry aged steaks and a smattering of jumbo-sized seafood. There are more than 15 wines for sale by glass, and a wide variety of bottles to match whatever you have for dinner. Despite the fancy flairs in look and taste, Shannon's baseball connection provides a touch of unpretentious friendly casualness. The restaurant's strong affiliation to the Cardinals and Busch Stadium is obvious in the private rooms dedicated to star Cardinals players and baseball paraphernalia. The result is an elegant restaurant that packs them in not only before and after Cardinals games, but also for lunch throughout the week.

You could do much better than mike shannons. Rude staff, way overpriced. The steaks were good however, but you can find much better food and service in st louis for one third the price! AVOID

Where do I start???? The absolute worst dining experience I had in a long, long, time. We had a party of four, and were all well dressed. We were seated at table next to the bar that was very noisy, in an unpleasant way. Our waiter had a thick two foot long pony tail that looked dirty, so dirty that we would not have been surprised if a bug jumped out of it. Gross!!! We asked for the price of the special that had been described, and our waiter's comment said he didn't know because he wasn't about prices. He finally said it was probably in the low $20s but he was wrong because it showed up on the bill as $28. He may not have been about prices, but those prices sure made it to our bill. We asked if we could get an end cut of the prime rib and he said we could and how done would we like it. We stated that you can only get an end cut well done, and he replied that end cuts can be any degree of doneness you want. Now everyone knows who has ever had an end cut that they can only be well done. The waiter's attitude deteriorated towards us when we declined to order a second martini. We also had to ask for more water. The food was passable and bland. Not anything like the reviews we had read before going to the restaurant. We were in St. Louis on business for two weeks and had visited all the top restaurants in town, and were looking forward to a nice dining experience. Mike Shannon's Steak House did not live up to its reputation and ended up being our worst St. Louis dining experience. A can of tuna eaten at home would have been more enjoyable.

Let's face it, no one goes to Shannons after a ballgame to eat $25 steaks. We dropped about $45 in an hour on puny chicken wings and tough calamari appetzers and drinks in the "bar/casual dining area" and we were not allowed to go into the "fine dining room" to see Shannon on a break from his post game call in show by a snippy matre'd. The place wasn't even half full. St Louis has way to many good restaurants...don't waste your time here.
