Blue Plate Special: Fortel's pizza is popular because the dough used for the medium-thin crust is made on-site and real mozzarella cheese is always used. While the classic tomato sauce is also homemade, Fortel's encourages customers to try other sauces like the white sauce, pesto, barbeque or even a beef gravy sauce. Appetizers include the usual fried fare of wings, cheese sticks and toasted ravioli. The menu also offers salads, sandwiches, and pastas.

The Dish: This mom-and-pop pizzeria is now a successful St. Louis area chain of nine pizza joints, but it all began here in Affton where the Fortel family turned a little pizzeria into an 80-seat dining room.

The Atmosphere: Pizza places abound in every city, so Fortel's must be doing something right to have expanded so rapidly. The tables fill quickly, especially on Friday and Saturday nights, with families, teens, pizza lovers and folks looking for a late-night meal. The serve-yourself soda ensures a very casual atmosphere. -- Hillary Wicai

  • Fantastic Food and service

    Review rating : 5out of 5   musicalsol - 01/11/2007

I have been a regular at this restaurant for over 10 years. I have kept coming back because it is the best tasting pizza in town. The friendly ownership and staff is a big plus. The founder used to stand by the door and greet everyone in person as you walked through the door and he made an effort to welcome everyone personally. The attitude has remained even though the owner founder has passed on. Everyone I take there from out of town feels it is one of the best pizzas they have ever tried.
I agree over and over again.

  • Identity Theft WaitingtoHappen

We had been wanting to try this restaurant. We go out to eat on a regular basis.Hubby and I visited the Fortel's Pizza Den location in Florissant. After sitting at an outside patio table to browse the menu,we moved inside to a dining table, and went up to the counter to make our order of pizza,an appetizer, nd garlic cheese bread. We were then informed that dining in customers who pay by credit card have to physically leave their credit cards at the counter (not just they swipe it and give it back, you have to *leave your Mastercard there* with the cashier at the front counter the whole time you are dining until you are done). The girl put my Mastercard under the corner of her mouse pad (in full reach of anyone who walked in the door) and was going to leave it there until I asked her to move it, then she put it in the cash drawer. Because of this we made sure to sit within sight of the cash register so that no one was charging things on my card while we were eating. I asked the cashier if this is store policy and she informed me that it is the policy for people who dine in and pay by credit card. This is identity theft waiting to happen. If we had not been sitting within sight of the cash register the cashier or anyone could theoretically have charged anything on my Mastercard. The food was good but I really have privacy concerns about them **physically holding onto my credit card the whole time we were dining**, plus the total disregard for the security of my personal information. Also you have to wonder about a place that distrusts their customers this much. My parents had wanted to try this restaurant also, but after I told them about this they were horrified. So was my neighbor. I wonder if any of the other moms at school that I talk to every day have had a similar experience. Basically, the food was good but the service was the worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant

  • The Best Darn Pizza Around

    Review rating : 5out of 5   ogc90 - 07/10/2006

Couldn't wait for the Fairview Heights Illinois pizza den to open. Now we can eat Fortel's often. It is the best pizza in the area, eating in with great pizza den atmosphere for the entire family or take out. The pizza is great. Glad to have Fortel's close for a great pizza fix anytime.

  • Like eating cardboard

    Review rating : 1out of 5   srich21 - 04/20/2006

A couple friends and I stopped and got a thin crust sausage pizza and we all agreed it was the nastiest pizza we had ever eaten. The crust was like cardboard, the sauce was extremely bland and virtually tasteless, and there was hardly sausage on it, which was also rather bland. It was worst than those store brand Totino's pizza's I used to eat back in the day.

Very good pizza and salads, great service too at the North location.

  • National Pizza Pro

    Review rating : 5out of 5   knowbones21 - 04/27/2005

I worked at Fortel's back in the day (21 years ago)when it sat 6 people, and even today they make a great pie. I've worked all over the nation and the pizza in Chicago, New York and the Southwest don't compare to the wonderfully homemade taste of a pizza from Fortel's. My christmas present last year was a half-baked pizza from Fortel's pack with dry ice and Federal Expressed to Boston in a day and a half....that's how good these pies are. Like the old Alka Seltzer commercail said, "try it, you'll like it".

Thankfully my favorite pizza, Fortels is just two minutes down the street here in Affton and I am never disappointed. Im pretty basic when it comes to my favorite toppings... sausage, pepperoni and black olives and its always perfect.

  • Not the Best

    Review rating : 2out of 5   megn133 - 03/21/2005

I went to a Fortel's once, and I didn't think the pizza was anything to get excited over. Also, their games are stupid and the prizes from the "claw" machine were easily ripped out...so if your into that, then go there, I guess.

  • Cambells Sauce

    Review rating : 0out of 5   azkinney - 03/21/2005

For a so called original pizza place---I could not get over how much the tomato sauce tasted like it came straight from a can of Campbells Tomato Soup!!
    Never again !!

  • Fortels Smells

    Review rating : 0out of 5   whosjur - 03/03/2005

Eight of us tried the Affton Fortels a few weeks ago. After ordering the food, we sat and waited. It took about three minutes for the aroma of bathroom air freshener to overwhelm us. That cloying, sickeningly sweet sanitizing stuff that blows out of the little boxes on the restroom walls permeated the whole place. We changed the order to go, and waited outside until it was ready. The pizza was ok, but we will not go back to that location even for carry out.
