Blue Plate Special: Fortel's pizza is popular because the dough used for the medium-thin crust is made on-site and real mozzarella cheese is always used. While the classic tomato sauce is also homemade, Fortel's encourages customers to try other sauces like the white sauce, pesto, barbeque or even a beef gravy sauce. Appetizers include the usual fried fare of wings, cheese sticks and toasted ravioli. The menu also offers salads, sandwiches, and pastas.

The Dish: This mom-and-pop pizzeria is now a successful St. Louis area chain of nine pizza joints, but it all began here in Affton where the Fortel family turned a little pizzeria into an 80-seat dining room.

The Atmosphere: Pizza places abound in every city, so Fortel's must be doing something right to have expanded so rapidly. The tables fill quickly, especially on Friday and Saturday nights, with families, teens, pizza lovers and folks looking for a late-night meal. The serve-yourself soda ensures a very casual atmosphere. -- Hillary Wicai

  • Really Good Pizza

    Review rating : 5out of 5   TELSTAR409 - 07/25/2008

We eat at the McKenzie location. The toppings are the freshest around and they are more than generously applied. Love the sauce.
Could use a little more cheese though.

They would go out of business in NY serving this pizza when compared to the greats like Grimaldi's, Pats and John's Pizza in NYC. PEOPLE HERE HAVE NO CLUE WHAT PIZZA IS SUPPOSED TO BE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • something has changed!!!!

i have been going to fortel's for over 20 yrs and the pizza has always been the best , but over the last year something has changed ,the pizza taste different and the cheese taste's bad. i think as they have grown as a business they have taken short cut's .whatever you did stop and go back to the old way!!!never compromise the original product.

  • .Love that Pizza!!!

We eat at the Fortel's in Fairview Heights, IL.
It is the best pizza we have had moving around in the military anywhere.
Love supporting a family own business.
So much toppings on it, that my husband can still have it without the crust on a low carb diet. Their crust is the best. We also love their own salad dressing. You can buy it at Schnuck's grocery stores.
    Way to go Fortel's!!!

  • WONDERFUL! Best pizza in the area!

    Review rating : 5out of 5   LAChrismer - 05/31/2008

I live in O'Fallon, Missouri and order from the one off of Mexico Road. The staff is especially friendly and courteous. The pizza is so delicious. The crust has just enough crunch and is very flavorful. Also, their sauce is the best you’ll ever taste. It’s almost a little sweet! They set the standard for "piled high" pizzas. If you order one of their specialty pizzas (my favorite is the Shelly's Deluxe) you can only eat but a few slices because they are so filling! One plus for me is they offer green olives as a topping. If you've never had green olives on a pizza, you are missing out. Only downside, which really doesn’t bother me, is price. It's usually about 20 or so dollars for the largest pizza, and they don't offer coupons that I'm aware of. Honestly though, price really isn't a problem for me because the pizza is so worth it! KEEP ON MAKING WONDERFUL PIZZAS FORTELS! I would give you 10 stars if I could!

  • The Best in Town

    Review rating : 5out of 5   tomtipper - 09/02/2007

There are several Fortels locations throughout the area. I eat mainly at the Kirkwood location and without a doubt they produce the best tasting best quality product for the cost in the city.

  • Rock Road much better

    Review rating : 5out of 5   lisamomof5 - 02/22/2007

If you're in the North County area, PLEASE eat at the St. Charles Rock Road location instead of the N Hwy 67 (N. Lindbergh). The Hwy 67 is an old St. Louis Bread Co. store and it's disgusting! Dark, dirty, neighboring tables are way too close, it's greasy and has rude employees. The Rock Road is brighter, has larger and much more toppings. If you've never had Fortel's give it a try. The toppings are large, not all ground up like other pizza places. It's a great, casual family place. So what if the games are "cheesy", the kids still love 'em and that's what counts!

  • Loaded with toppings

    Review rating : 5out of 5   mdw0120 - 02/15/2007

The thing I like best about Fortel's pizza is when you order a two or three topping pizza, you get two or three times the toppings. This is in contrast to other pizza chains, you know who I mean, where if you order a 3 topping pizza, you get a variety of three toppings, but not much (iof any) more than if you ordered a 1 topping pizza, but they still charge you for the extra toppings (what a rip-off). Also, If you like pesto dishes, try Fortel's pesto sauce instead of the regular sauce. There's no tomato in it, but it's great. My favorite is sausage and grilled onions with pesto sauce.
