Here's the perfect stop during an afternoon spent tooling along Manchester Road, formerly known as Route 66. Hop up on one of the chrome-and-red vinyl stools surrounding the counter at Carl's Drive In -- there are no tables. The inside is almost as small as the parking lot, but you can watch the cooks prepare your meal right in front of you.
The fare at this authentic, '50s-era diner is mostly hamburgers, hot dogs and sandwiches, with all of your greasy favorites on the side: fries, cheese fries or onion rings. The delicious burgers have made the spot a local favorite. You can wash it all down with a shake, malt or fountain soda. Smokers take one side of the counter, while non-smokers get the other.

How long has Manchester been old route 66 ? If I looked for it on the old route I would be on Watson Road and several miles away.

  • Carl's...Its what a burger place ought to be

    Review rating : 5out of 5   Jknickel - 05/16/2008

My family and I have been enjoying Carl's for over 25 years, and the best thing about it is nothing's changed! Frank and the crew work to get the hot burgers and food to customer ASAP, I bet it's not 10 seconds from the grill to the customer. Try the double cheese, the perfect proportion of bun, beef and cheese, or the footlong chili dog, or my personal favorite the chili 3 way with a tamale on top! you can't go wrong with a curly Q (deep fried hot dog). Home made root beer to top it all off. The fine folks at Carl's kow what they're doing, and don't mess with success.

  • Carls is on HWY100 not old 66

The double cheseburgers are only surpassed by the COLD root beer floats. No wonder they've been there all these years.

If you are looking for another thick burger this is not the place for you . . . but these PERFECT thin burgers are my FAVORITE. Made to order right in front of you so everything is served nice and hot. Gotta have an ice cold mug of root beer or a float tops. Great atmosphere.

  • Why did Carl's rate at all...

    Review rating : 2out of 5   jimhlenz - 03/09/2007

There is a reason there isn't a Carl's on every corner. The "burgers" consist of a greasy ,paper thin wisp of beef on a commercial bun. Maybe it’s the nostalgia for a time before quality and value were important. You can do much better than this by visiting….well anywhere.

  • Best burger

I can belive you would say some stupid red robbins burger is better than this. I mean this is not the place to come if you want a burger so thick you can't put it in your mouth, but the juices water down and taste amazing. The drink you get there is no shakes and malts, you get the IBC rootbeer. Blueberry hill and o connals should be under this resteraunt to. If want to try find out try going there on a saturday at noon. People are standing out the door waiting.
