The smells of grilled steak, beefy cheddar soup and garlic mashed potatoes fill Citizen Kane's Steak House. The historic Kirkwood house was once an Irish pub. This restaurant cuts its own beef and prides itself on its homemade sauces, salad dressings and desserts. Diners create their own entree by selecting their cut of beef and specifying the sauce. The menu also features chicken and shrimp, with a variety of specials that include seafood, chops and pasta. Citizen Kane's is also known for its friendly and helpful service. Portions will likely leave you with leftovers, but you won't want to share them with Rover. Dinner is served Tuesday through Saturday and reservations are highly recommended.

  • We will never go back!!!

They may have good steaks but their manager/owner is bad enough for us to never go back.

We used to go to this place once or twice a week and made reservations for a dinner party. One of the guests couldn't walk up the stairs because of advanced parkinsons disease, so we reserved a large table on the main floor.

The night of our dinner party the owner/manager had bumped us from our reserved table on the main floor so that his family could use it, and forced our friend to walk up the steep stairs.

We will never forgive the idiot.

  • Best steaks and chops in USA!

    Review rating : 5out of 5   ahchu1 - 02/24/2007

My family has gone to Kanes 3-4 times per year for over 10 years. The quaint Victorian mansion beats those loud chain steakhouses hands down. The quality of the beef is a cut above those chains and consistent from visit to visit. The pork chop is huge and can not be eaten at one setting! The New Orleans style shrimp appetizer is awesome as are the garlic mashed potatoes and light and crispy warm bread. The salad and creamy Mayfair dressing is also unique to Kanes. We don't even use menus anymore. Wherever we eat in the US and whomever we take there for the first time always compares to Kanes and always say that Kanes is the GOLD STANDARD!

Very overated. There are other Steak houses not listed...Annie Gunn's and Ruth's Kreis. More expensive, but a MUCH better cut of beef.

  • Great steak. Very over-rated.

    Review rating : 3out of 5   tphob - 01/01/2007

The steak was to die for! If the prices were acceptable this would therefore be a great place to go. However, the prices are through the roof. The dining area is unique (oddly configured)but without character or ambience. The staff is competent but minimally attentive, bland, and without personality. The sides are poor. Bottom line is this is a very ordinary steak house with great steak and astonomical prices. Vastly over-rated. Go to Shannon's, Charcoal House, or Stoney River.

  • Worth the trip!!

I have never been to Kane's without going away feeling that I had just been tricked. Let me say this, the steaks are outstanding. However, the sides that are offered leave me wanting. I once ordered the mushroom appetizer (or side, I can't remember) and found a cup with some warmed button mushrooms?? Not exactly what I expected given the awesome steaks. Overall a place not to be missed, but maybe a little work still to do on the rest of the menu.

Went for our anniversary - used to be great. Felt rushed, food was mediocre and service was canned. Way too expensive for what you get. For better food at much more reasonable prices - Tucker's.

  • Great Steak...

We've been to several steakhouses trying to find the best and Citizen Kane's is the best we've had so far.

  • Disappointing.

    Review rating : 2out of 5   mike1742 - 02/19/2005

Slow service. Got seated 20 minutes late. The decor is old and tired. Too many other good steaks in STL to go back to this place.

  • Awesome service and steaks

    Review rating : 5out of 5   slritch38 - 01/20/2005

What's a better word than the best steaks or service? Citizen Kane's of course! Awesome service and awesome steaks. To those who has not been to CK's are lost opportunity to taste the finest steak anywhere, better than all of the steak houses we've been to. The service is top rated and very friendly. Atmosphere are warm, candelit tables and very relaxing. We are going to celebrate our wedding anniversary there tonight! The place for all occasions. Our best to CK's.

We loved Citizen Kane's and will be back. I had the surf -n- turf special and it was fabulous! My boyfriend had the pork chop and he also loved it!
