The City Market has been a legendary produce-shopping destination for years now. But until Succotash came along, the restaurants around the perimeter of the market seemed an afterthought, casual little places that may or may not be open during the week, when produce-shopping crowds thin. But Succotash, an upscale diner with flair, is a destination on any day of the week. With its access to the areas best produce, Succotash is very popular with vegetarians. The storefront, which overlooks the market square, opens fully in good weather, so the restaurant has an open-air feel. Succotash is mostly a breakfast and lunch place, and serves breakfast throughout the day. Succotash is open for dinner two nights a week. For breakfast, pecan and pear hotcakes are just right with warm syrup. At lunch, the small restaurant fills with customers, who fill themselves with sandwiches like grilled cheese made from smoked gouda and artichoke hearts on sourdough. Sunday is especially worth a trip to the Market, as the dinner buffet spread is amazing. -- Anna Foote

Oh YUM!!!
All I can say is "KITCHEN SINK SCRAMBLE!" It is the best of all that is Succotash! Potatoes, onion and pepper, scrambled eggs, canadian bacon and G-R-A-V-Y! I love this place and sure, the hipster servers may seem slow for those used to eating at Denny's, but they are always busy! That kitchen is never still and if the staff are not serving your food, they are working on something else. Where else can you get fresh and hot food made from mostly local ingredients for such bargain prices? A trip up the spiral stairs to the restroom also allows one the chance to see the library of cookbooks that the owner must pull her recipies from. Everything from Betty Crocker to your aunt Bessie's church cookbook is on those shelves. The Wednesday night set menu is a steal and on a summer night, it is quite romantic to sit on the patio and look out on the KC skyline and sip wine from a thrift store coffe mug! So if you like your meal made fresh and to order, served by artsy fartsy staff in a colorful atmosphere, SUCCOTASH is the place for you!

First I want to comment on the bad reviewers-
When your food is hand crafted just for you and not sitting under a warmer, it takes longer. This isn't Crapple B's or another chain restaurant.
Bad service? I've always had a good experience with the staff. You know, wait staff are people too and should be treated with respect. They're only human and have bad days just like everyone else. No it's not an excuse but ask yourself, the last time you had a bad/stressful day, did you take it out on the wrong people? I'm just saying that if I notice that a service person doesn't look happy, I TALK to them. I ask them how they're doing.... You know, let them see that you value their time and services.
If you see that there's a lot of people waiting, get your name on the list, go look around the market and come back. The thing is, Succotash doesn't kick people off tables if they stay and chat too long. I think that's another reason why there can be a longer wait- people are ACTUALLY enjoying their food and conversation.
Remember this isn't a fast food or semi-fast food restaurant. If you want instant gratification but with processed, chemically altered to taste good food, go to a chain restaurant.
I hate having to defend one of my favorite restaurants, but I feel like the bad comments are coming from people who have low self esteem issues.
NOW on to the positive stuff:
We eat there all the time- It doesn't matter if it's breakfast, lunch or their 4 course dinner on Wednesdays (great date night, by the way!), we love it all.
The owner, Beth Barden, is very passionate about cooking with the top ingredients while keeping it organic. If she has time she comes out and talks to her customers. She's so personable and hilarious. We really feel at home at Succotash and know we are going to a place where the people are NICE and FAST! She also supports local businesses and farmers since she tries to purchase most of her food from them.
I take my clients there for lunch. Most of the time, if they're from South KC, they've never been in such a fun/eclectic restaurant. Once they eat at Succotash, they are totally hooked! If you are new or visiting Kansas City, this should be one of your first stops. Heck, if you've lived here for awhile and have never experienced Succotash, you are missing out! About the food- Beth has a talent of putting together ingredients making everything taste better than expected.
We had her cater our Rehearsal Dinner- we had soul/comfort food. People still talk about how excellent the food was and this was back on June 22, 2007. The meatloaf was flavorful and not dry. We had red potato salad which had just the right amount of spices, creaminess and chunks of potato.
I may not be a cook but I don't eat packaged food or fast food which I think clears my palate to what's really good. I have a higher standard for what I consume at restaurants, that's why I eat at Succotash. I know Beth's not serving bad food disguised under lots of salt and sugar. Their food is fresh, wholesome and is always excellent!
Don't forget to tip the attentive wait staff! They work very hard making sure the customer has everything they need. For breakfast, it's nice to know you'll always have a HOT & FULL cup of coffee! By the way, the coffee might taste different to you because it's Chicory coffee called Cafe Du Monde - same coffee you'd get at the Original French Market Coffee Stand in New Orleans.the worst service and food ever
We knew City Market was crowded and we would have to wait for a table, but we didn't know the attitude of the staff would turn our stomachs. The "host" was so rude, you would have thought we were all waiting for a table at "French Laundry," not some greasy spoon with cooked coffee, slow service and poor food. We had to wait 15 minutes before anyone showed up to take our order for drinks. Tables sat empty, while the staff chatted with a local musician about cigarettes. No organization, no one to oversee staff or te kitchen, -No More, Never Again!
really horrible faux hipster service and bad food

speedracer211 was right on the money with the review. We decided to try this restaurant as Cascones had a really long wait. That was a mistake! The wait at Succotash was probably even longer and the food was BAD. Tough eggs, cool pancakes and horrible coffee. Our waitress was running the entire time, so didn't have much time for us, poor thing. We saw 2 (Two!) of the faux hipster "hosts" who never bothered to help with the food or the service. The hosts were rude and arrogant.! Not hip, unless hip means spinning around while they call out names, overdone hair, and an overblown sense of their own importance! The guys next door at Corrollos may not be hip, but they know how to work together and serve food with a smile! Going to Succotash is a waste of time and money!
I love Succotash

I ate lunch there yesterday! I work near the Market and I find Succotash to be a unique and charming dining experience every time. The atmosphere is great and the food is even better. It's arguably the best restaurant in the City Market.

my name is beth and i own and run succotash. in response to the diner that posted the excessively harsh commentary... i am sorry that you had such a bad experience. as those who have eaten here before know, we recently went through a kitchen renovation and were closed for several weeks. part of the renovation included expanding our line and hiring new cooks. we are a small independent restaurant and take great pride in providing a tasty and high quality plate of food coupled with thoughtful service. part of the nature of a small business in a high traffic area is that sometimes there is a wait- both for a table and for food. while i could change the way i do things, i choose not to serve prepackaged items and cook only to order with the best quality ingredients i can find, as quickly as i and my lovely staff are capable. my servers, while decidedly "hip" are accomplished, hard working young men and women who take their jobs seriously and are not interested in making anyone's visit less than pleasant. it is a shame that this is your only experience with us and that it caused you such a great degree of distress. if you had simply tasted what was presented to you and would have allowed us to i am confident we could have made your brunch experience a good
one. and, by the way, you can hold me responsible for the cheesy decor. i love it.Horrible serivce and slow
It's probable that Succotash has decent food, but I wouldn't know. We stopped in on a Saturday for a bite around 2pm. It wasn't very crowded but it took us several minutes to be seated while the guy (who I assume was the host) had a cigarette. We decided to split one of their egg benedict dishes because their portions are large, but after waiting more than thrity minutes for one dish we decided to leave. Our waitress stopped by about 15 minutes into our wait to tell us it would be any minute and then proceeded to avoid eye contact for the rest of the time until we flagged her down to tell her we were leaving. The final straw was when a table of four that arrived after us got their food first which would've been fine if they had ordered soup and salads but they didn't.
It you like cheesy decor, dickies wearing faux hipster servers and a long wait then give it try. I didn't have the patience
