Kansas City is a cow town -- there's no getting around it. (Those of you who would disagree, look to the stockyards just west of downtown.) But for beef-eaters, being in this cow town has a huge upside -- you'll find some of the best steaks anywhere. The Hereford House tradition is a strong part of KC's steak reputation. Since 1957, chefs at this restaurant have been aging and cooking steaks to perfection, and the tradition continues. You'll find all the expected steak-house fare here, including, of course, the KC strip. For non-steak eaters, the menu also features good seafood dishes. Sides include crisp salads and potatoes just about any way you'd like them -- try them mashed, baked or french-fried. Prices are in line with what you'll see at any high-quality steak house. Frugal meat eaters have two options: Try Hereford House for lunch, when entree prices are lower and a variety of sandwiches are offered, or drop in for an early dinner. The restaurant serves a less-expensive, still-delicious sunset menu from 3-5:30PM on weekdays and from 4-5PM on Saturday and Sunday. -- Anna Foote

Bad Service - Bad Food

Don't believe the hype. Hereford House is not all that. The Independence location, I have to agree, has tough, gristly, fatty steaks. The one and only time I will ever overpay for this type of poor quality, we couldn't even get a server to our table as he disappeared after he took our order, leaving us to the bus boy. This was an awful experience and we'll never go back. I'll save my money for Outback - which is far better!

my wife and i live in sunny florida now, we buy our beef at the super-target, which i might add is black angus beef, this meat is by far better than any beef we have ever eaten. footnote---- we have been all over this great country of ours the only place that could maybe be just as good than here is the stock yards in oklahoma city
Great Valentine's Date
My husband and I went to the Shawnee, Ks location on Valentines day and it was great. My husband literally cut his steak with a fork. The coconut shrimp was awesome and we even splurged on the fantastic carrot cake. Surprising with the holiday rush, our serve was quick and friendly. The whole experience was great and we will be looking forward to going back. I am very surprised at the negative feedback listed on this site, if they weren't worth the money, Kansan's would have run them out of town.
Kansas City should sue these people for ruining KC's image

I didn't think you could get a bad steak in KC but you can. This place is
way out of the price range for the quality. I agree with the majority of the reviewers here; don't waste your money on this place. We had to constantly ask for things that should have been on the table like bread and drinks. Our server was fair but the ambience was ruined by some
strangeness of the people working. There were so many servers standing around conversing that I resented the intrusion . For these prices I expected a classy place. And the ribeye was tasteless and tough. The prime rib was okay but nothing to write home about.BITCHERS BEWARE
The food and service at the Independence location was very good. Perhaps some people get back what they put out..
Redbeefman
How in the world did this place get a # one rating - it's not even a steak house. Hooper Nebraska, (pop 385 - about 50 miles NW of Omaha) has two STEAK houses - both far better than this one! And prices about half this one. Really dissapointed.
Shoe leather steaks
We have gone to the newest Hereford House in Independence, MO. Have given this restaurant three chances and will never again go back! Each and every time the steaks were tough and over priced. The service, what service?! It seems the watier/waitress that work at this restaurant just expect to get good tips for no service.
Shell of former self
Had eaten an exquisite filet at the downtown location in 1969. Came back years later to downtown and Zona Rosa location and was bitterly disappointed. Meat was shoe leather, salad terrible, baked potato anything but soft. Service mediocre. This restaurant is living off it's past reputation. Ruth Chris it ain't!!
