It may surprise you to hear the name of this place mentioned almost as many times as you bring up the subject of pizza. You'll understand why when you finally venture into the aging east side of downtown St. Paul to try a Savoy pie. A lot of St. Paul pizza is made the old way, zesty and un-prettified by trends, and here is a prime example. You can order your thin crust with traditional toppings or ask them to throw on a couple of your personal preferences, if you dare. Either way, the pizza comes out loaded up pretty heavy with ingredients, sliced in squares (as required by traditional Pizza Law), tasting like it did in the days when everyone ''went out'' for pizza, and before cholesterol was a household word. Families with dissenters will also find pastas, salads and sandwiches on the menu. The decor is all middle-class barroom, to be sure, with booths and tables and a big TV that draws sports fans. East St. Paulites have their own Savoy takeout location, and a small Newport branch is perfect for a stop on your way back from Red Wing. -- John Sharpe

This is where I tell people from out of town to go to get the very best pizza around.

  • SAVOY IS THE VERY BEST

    Review rating : 5out of 5   AmberStill - 05/30/2008

I HAVE TRAVELED EXTENSIVLY THROUGHOUT THE USA AND THE UK. SAVOY BY FAR OVER SHADOWS THEM ALL. THEY USE THE BEST OF INGREDIENTS AND THEY DO NOT SKIMP FOR SURE. EATING A PIECE OF ONE OF THEIR DELUXE PIZZA'S IS LIKE EATING A SANDWICH ITS SO THINK WITH GOODNESS. IF YOU HAVE NEVER TRIED IT YOU ARE REALLY MISSING OUT ON A REAL PIZZA TASTE TREAT

    Review rating : 5out of 5   AThomas222 - 05/16/2008

Best pizza in the area. My wife and I travel 55 miles one way about every
five or six weeks just for a pie.

  • This is my favorite!

The pizza is the best I have ever had. I love it. I told a co-worker that I was going for pizza at Savoy's. When I got there, she and her husband were enjoying a pizza. She told me that she just had to have some after I mentioned it. Both of us are fans of Savoy's. Go early though because parking is limited and it gets crazy in the lot during dinner time.

  • Eagan Location - Take out

    Review rating : 1out of 5   yingele - 07/08/2007

    Recently opened in Eagan.
Picked up a pizza this week and when I got it home I was sadly disapointed.
Dry and over cooked, with burned crust on bottom (black)
Called the manager and was told "They are having some problems"
Took my name and supposed to give me my next order free,
will give them one more chance.
For the $$$$ higher price if the pizza is not improved most likely will not go back to this location.
Can't go wrong with the original on 7th st.

When you want the best real pizza, Red's is where to go. This is not a "flatten out a loaf of bread and put sauce on it" pizza. Thin crust a lot of very good sauce and heavily laiden with toppings. You don't go out for pizza and worry about the cholesterol. All things in moderation. That is why Red's is the best. When you want to splurge and tumble off the wagon, tumble into Red's where you know you'll be delighted. It sounds like and add for Red's. It is sort of. It is what I tell people looking for a good pizza joint. I guess I just don't get paid for it. Word of mouth is the best advertising anyway.
