Like some of its restaurant neighbors, Rainbow Chinese Restaurant crossed the street into bigger accommodations and upgraded its dining atmosphere. More of an upscale kind of place now amid less expensive ethnic Eat Street eateries, this bar and restaurant also stands out for those with Chinese dining preferences. Many are those who clamor for Rainbow's stir-fries, noodle dishes or varieties of seafood. While the menu seems to offer everything under the Chinese cuisine rainbow, regulars have favorites that bring them back from around the Cities. Standards and specialty items are equally well regarded both by experts and those with more cautious palates. The five Wong sisters who own Rainbow are to blame for the success of this always-busy location, mostly due to their attention to freshness and other, smaller details. The colorful dining room is friendly to groups and kids, as well as the budget, while a full service bar beckons to couples or singles waiting for takeout. -- John Sharpe

Good Vegan Dishes!

The Twin Cities has many restaurants, Asian. Middle Eastern and others, that serve excellent vegetarian/vegan food. This is a category that should be in your next survey!
It might include Kilamanjaro (Ethiopian), Chiang Mai Thai, Falafel King, Cristos, Agri (local fresh foods).and any number of excellent other choices, Indian, etc.Add CommentThe end of The Rainbow!
Haven't been to the Rainbow for several years, loved it when I worked in the area 5/6 years ago. Well, they moved, things have changed, service is lousy, atmosphere is upscale but no longer homey. The food is similar, but downgraded in quality and portion size, and much more pricey. Probably will not return and I LOVE Chinese food!
Lousy Service, Very Mediocre Food

I was visiting Minneapolis from L.A. last weekend. We got to the restaurant about 10 pm last Saturday night and the hostess was counting up the receipts and didn't even acknowledge us for about 5 mins! Then she said just have a seat, but most of the tables (especially the good ones were still dirty and there was hardly anyone even there)! The waitresses were chatting with one another and it took another 5 mins. before our waitress even came to the table! I don't think I would have minded all that much if the food would have at least been decent. The prices were quite high as well for what you got. Oh well, at least I can cross this place off of my list for future visits anyway. I'm still looking for a really good Chinese restaurant in the Twin Cities because I go there quite often! Any Suggestions??

I love it there and Tammy is such a sweetheart. My favorite dish is the chicken fun with black bean sauce.

Was a "regular", food
was consistent, yet when
we had a issue because
our server was having a
terrible day, and took
it out on us, she didnt
take our order down
properly, and when they
remade it...they used
the same ingrediants
from the wrong order and
just switched the
noodles...it was evident
as we saw the original
noodle in there, when
asked to speak to a
manager, no one was
available and left our
name and number, no one
even bothered to follow
up, thats bad business
especially when one is a
regular,driving almost
40 minutes to get there,
doesnt matter how good
the food can be, its
unprofessional not to
even return a call, even
worse if there is an
issue its quite obvious
they dont seem to care.
To me thats just "bad

Rainbow Chinese Restaurant was such a wonderful surprise, I am still shaking my head. It is clean and warm and comfortable. I had a dish with three different meats and vegetables. The sauce was delicate, the vegetables crisp and the meats succulent.
I also ordered egg rolls. They were crisp and tasty, but definitely Vietnamese, not Chinese. I asked one of the staff if they have a Vietnamese cook, because my egg rolls had the bumpy, super crisp wontons and finely chopped mixture. She said they were Vietnamese egg rolls and I told her I loved them.
All I think about is going back.
My Mother was with me and she is 92 and a little afraid of new spots. Much to my shock, she announced in the middle of her meal (same as mine) that she liked the restaurant and the food very much.
I use chopsticks very well and I believe that the staff was more friendly when they observed me using chopsticks.
I know Rainbow will be the Chinese Restaurant of choice for me and my Mother.speedy & turtle's Review

Just went tonight & enjoyed the atmosphere & the service, but were disappointed with the fried appetizers & 2 of the entrees. The Peking pork with cilantro was the only good thing we had. Been burping it up ever since. The waiter was very attentive & pleasant. Pink lemondade was watery. We didn't try any desserts, but on the way home bought some double-dipped chocolate peanuts.
