The ongoing Pizza Wars always benefit the pizza lovers among us, especially when local restaurateurs get into the act. This Twin Cities original entered the fray well-armed. The name is short for Neapolitan, but the fare is not short on taste. A diverse selection of ingredients and a thin yet not-too-crispy crust result in a stylish pie that's becoming the favorite of many who've tried 'em all. 20-plus wood-fired varieties ($7-$12) include the one that started it all, the Margherita, and the Diavola (salami, pepperoncini, olives, mozzarella, tomatoes, cracked red pepper and basil), as well as white pizzas. Cheeses, artichokes, porcini mushrooms and all the rest of the ingredients are fresh and deftly harmonized. You can even have your pizza folded into a calzone if you choose. At lunchtime, several thick focaccia sandwiches are available. And there's a Big Salad -- the 'Verde' easily takes the edge off two appetites waiting for their main meal. Unfortunately, the menu provides Italian pronunciations, but few of us like (and need) that sort of thing. Both locations have good wine lists and outdoor seating -- the newer Uptown site also has a full bar.

go to punch...
...for real italian pizza.
This place tries to present itself as a real italian pizzeria, with italian names for the pizzas, even the correct italian pronunciation written on the menu. But the pizza comes close only to the worst pizza you could get in italy (so at least better than a lot of what you get here in the states, if that says anything), but still falls flat and far from anything decent.
The crust was tough and tastless, and the parmesean cheese on my pizza the pre-grated stuff. not what i want or expect for a $10.00 pizza.
On a positive note, the atmosphere is bright and cheery, the waitstaff friendly (our waitress even took my pizza off the bill when I told her I didn't like it) and the place quiet, which makes it nice to go with friends since you can actually hear what is being said and don't feel the need to shout. The location is great too, near a lot of other hip places in northeast mpls.
But all in all, if you are looking for real, delicious italian pizza in the twin cities, go to Punch. You will be MUCH more satisfied.Add Comment
