This popular Japanese restaurant will have to do battle with Kikugawa on the Hennepin Bridge for local sushi bragging rights. But there is no denying Origami's excellence, as evidenced by the many awards the restaurant has collected -- for sushi and everything else. One look at the extensive menu will tell you what to expect once you enter this smart, sleek venue, located inside a preserved 19th-century stone building at the edge of the Warehouse District. The menu reads like a seafood and vegetable glossary, yet the modest prices allow you to indulge yourself to your heart's content. There is much more to enjoy, as well, on the lunch and ala carte dinner menus. Mackerel, octopus and other delicacies of the deep join chicken, pork and even a specially styled filet mignon. The full bar offers a wide selection of sakes, domestic and imported beers (including Japanese, of course) and a very respectably priced wine list. Like any good sushi place, Origami has many loyal followers, so make reservations during the week or get on the waiting list on weekends. -- John Sharpe

Origami
Service is slow but sushi bar is good
Add CommentActually, rather good

Origami has excellent green tea, very good and high quality sushi; a bit slow service-wise. The sushi, though, isn't anything extraordinary...but it's very good. Some of the spicy sushi is truly spicy.

Origami restaurant is one of the best Japanese restaurant in US. I travel half of year and visit many Japanese restaurant in many countries include Japan. Origami could be open one in Tokyo and Japanese would enjoy.
Mark's Review

I have been to Origami frequently. My most recent visit was on my birthday, 7/26. It was one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. After the expected wait in the upstairs bar, my wife and I were seated downstairs. So far so good. We ordered an appetizer, it took 25 minutes. Not so good. After ordering our entrees, some sushi for me and a beef dish for my wife, we didn't see our server for 40 minutes. Meanwhile, 4 other customer table nearby were served their food. At the one hour mark, still with no food, I got up and complained to the "hostess." In between answering the phone and charging bills, she told me that kind of wait is not unusual. I explained that I understood that the Sushi bar was the quickest place to get served and I undestood that tables were slower, but I could not accept that the server simply disappeared for that long -- no drinks, no update on the food, nothing. She had the rudeness and audacity to say to me, and this is a quote "this isn't McDonalds, you know." I couldn't believe it. My pregnant wife's appearance didn't even engender any sympathetic reaction at all. Needless to say we won't be back. This place SUCKS and I'll go out of my way to tell all (truncated)

I think this is the best sushi in the Twin Cities. I would NOT recommend sitting upstairs, however- the service is painfully slow, and the downstairs atmosphere is much nicer.
Aaron's Review

Good Sushi- not great. Both
Kikugawa and Sakura have
better (usually). If you
become friendly with one of
the sushi chef it can become
excellent at times (you don't
need to do this at the other
mentioned places). Not bad!
Fun atmosphere if you can get
in (somebody likes the place

This Place has the best Sushi in town and at time the worst atmosphere. It's not really the atmosphere its the crowding and the wait to get to the atmosphere. It's two floors of narrow restaurant. My best experiences have been when I go at 5 pm when they open. Or late at night after the dinner rush. Then the smallness of the space works to its advantage. Its Intimate and allmost romantic, depending of course on how far you are away from the kitchen. Try to sit towards the window on the first floor or allmost anywhere on the second floor. It's proximity to Theatre De La Jeune Leune is also a major plus!
